Apparently because of some poor judgement on the part of some senior members of the Juniata squad involving alchohol and women on their preseason trip to the Virgin Islands, the Head Coach has been given the door as of next year.
What a bummer for a great guy and very good volleyball person in Coach Shibuya.
Alchohol and females on away trips......involving male volleyball players. Pretty sure that if the Juniata Administration(BYU of the EAST) ran most any DI men's program we wouldn't have any coaches left.
Crappola Folks!

wow...
That is a hit for Juniata. Those guys never have the best athletes, but still manage to compete. Coach Shibuya has gone a great job maximizing the potential of those kids.
I hope he can stay involved the men's game someplace we need to keep the good ones involved.

It shows how administrations everywhere have been cracking down on coaches and teams.
What exactly was the incident?

Wow, yeah I would like to know more about the details of it? I am sure Ken won't find a hard time getting a new job, he did an amazing job there and he knows his stuff. I should know, my first volleyball camp in 9th grade was with him and in 10th grade he was the 18s coach for my club when I played 16s. A great guy and an amazing coach.

What is needed here is a good lawyer. Wrongful discharge.

Not to bash Shibuya because he has done great things with that program, but he is the coach and he is the one who takes the ultimate responsibility for the actions of his players while they were under his watch. It is a shame that it happened, but he is responsible for letting it happen.

do you think it is really that easy to control college athletes on away trips? especially trips to the Virgin Islands or Hawaii. I guarantee you everyteam except for BYU and Pepperdine would be out doing the same thing

Does anybody know what the drinking age in the Virgin Islands is? Because I would bet that it is probably 18 at the oldest. If the coach was drinking with the players that is one thing, but if the players went out on there own in a place that they were legally aloud to drink, I don't see how this could fall on his shoulders. All college athletes are old enough to take care of themselves and make thier own choices.

Marv doesn't get players who are the crazy party-ers... at least not on the traveling team....

I can't believe what I am reading here. You don't party on the road. Period. End of discussion. The liability that a university faces if one of their players gets into an accident while staying in a hotel under the supervision of a coach or team official falls right on the school. I hope this isn't a common occurence. Shame, shame on the sport if it is.

first of all, there is definitely more than just drinking that occurred with these players, who i am told were expelled because of their actions. it was bad enough that there was serious talk of cutting the program, DIII championships and all. secondly, if you are drinking on the road, you need to get your s*** straight. party it up when you get back to school. i know if any of my teammates partied while we were on the road, i would personally make sure that they were no longer my teammates. it is not acceptable because the fault goes back to the team as a whole. if they get caught, i get caught as well. ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALL

So what?
Players break curfew and stuff happens. How can a coach be everywhere? I can think of worse things that happened (non vb teams) and coaches didn't get fired. Rape, armed robbery, and even murder on various football squads and the coach didn't get the boot.
