Ohio State Men's Volleyball Defeats Mercyhurst, 30-28, 33-31, 30-21
Buckeye Matthew Hankey scores a match-high 13.5 points in the victory
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 11th-ranked Ohio State (15-4 overall, 3-2 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association) men's volleyball team defeated Mercyhurst (1-12, 1-5), 3-0 (30-28, 33-31, 30-21) Friday night in St. John Arena. OSU's Matthew Hankey (Jr./So., Naperville, Ill.) collected a match-high 13.5 points in the contest with Stuart Katz (5th/Sr., Port Washington, N.Y.) adding 11.5 and Layne Dreven (Sr./Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) 10.5. Hankey had eight kills in the match, adding three ace serves and five assist blocks. Katz contributed a team-high 11 kills and an assist block while Dreven had eight kills and five assist blocks. Laker Tim Wagner recorded a team-high 13 points with Dave Newman adding nine. Wagner had a team-high 13 kills in the match while Newman recorded eight kills and a solo block.
After Ohio State opened game one with a 1-0 lead, a Newman kill, an OSU error and a Wager kill gave Mercyhurst a 3-1 lead. At 8-6 Lakers, a Dreven kill and a block by John Albertson (So./Fr., Manchester, Mo.) and Hankey tied the game at eight. The Buckeyes went up two at 11-9. Mercyhurst tied the game at 11 and with an OSU error and a Newman solo block took a 13-11 lead. A Daniel Mathews (So., Shorewood, Wis.) solo block and a Hankey ace serve tied the game at 13. The Buckeyes opened an 18-15 lead but at 22-20, OSU, a Nate Keegan kill and a Buckeye error tied the game at 22. Kills by Albertson and Dreven put Ohio State ahead, 24-22. A Dreven kill gave the Buckeyes a 28-25 lead. An OSU error and a Wagner kill cut the Buckeye lead to 28-27. Ohio State reached game point with an Andy Cole (Sr., Glendale, Wis.) kill at 29-27. Service errors by both teams ended the game at 30-28, OSU. Ohio State hit .452 for the game to .444 for Mercyhurst.
At 2-2 in game two, the Lakers, with a 6-1 run, took an 8-3 lead. The run included two kills from Wagner, one from Mike Palaschak, a Dan Kick-Palaschak block and two OSU errors. The Lakers built a six point lead and with a Palaschak kill had game point at 29-23. A Katz kill made it 29-24. With Mathews serving, a Laker overpass set up a Dreven kill at 29-25. After a Mercyhurst time out, an ace serve by Mathews made it 29-26. A Laker error (29-27) and a Brett Versen (Jr./So., Centerville, Ohio) kill made it 29-28 as the Lakers called time out. A Versen-Dreven block tied the game at 29. An OSU error set game point for Mercyhurst at 30-29. A Laker error tied the game at 30. A Dreven-Hankey block gave OSU a 31-30 lead, serving game point. A Wagner kill tied the game at 31. OSU took a 32-31 lead with a Hankey kill and with a Ben Spurlock (So./Fr., Stow, Ohio)-Hankey block, won the game, 33-31, to take a 2-0 lead in the game. Ohio State hit .250 for the game to .135 for Mercyhurst.
Tied at four in game three, a Chad Proudman kill gave Mercyhurst a 5-4 lead. OSU tied the game with an Albertson kill at five. An ace serve by Hankey and an Albertson kill put OSU ahead, 7-5. The Buckeyes held and expanded the lead, winning the game with an Albertson kill at 30-21 to win the match, 3-0. Ohio State hit .542 for the game to .143 for Mercyhurst.
For the match, Ohio State hit .402 to .248 for Mercyhurst. OSU had a 49-44 advantage in kills and a five to one edge in ace serves. OSU's Hankey posted a career-high three ace serves in the contest. The Buckeyes gave up 17 service errors to 16 for the Lakers. Defensively, Ohio State had a 27-20 advantage in digs. OSU's Katz recorded a match-high nine for the Buckeyes while Kyle Miller had a team-high seven for the Lakers. At the net, Ohio State had a match-high 8.5 team blocks to three for Mercyhurst. Dreven and Hankey shared match-high honors for the Buckeyes with five assist blocks each. OSU setter Mathews had 44 assists in the match while Laker Kick had 40.
Ohio State heads to Long Beach, California next week to play in the 2006 Active Ankle Classic. The 11th-ranked Buckeyes face top-ranked Brigham Young (14-2) Friday, March 17 at 5 p.m. PT and play host and sixth-ranked Long Beach State (13-6) Saturday, March 18 at 7:30 p.m. PT
