I just watched the UCI - BYU match. I cannot imagine there's a better player in college volleyball than BYU's Cala. Has the POY ever been awarded to the FOY?
His hitting is beyond belief. He's a legit 6'8" to begin with and has inhuman jumping ability. As if that's not enough, he is as athletic as anyone on the court. He's their best passer and best hitter on a team that includes Perez, who is also incredible.

Off the AVCA results page -Yosleyder Cala had a match, career and team-season high 32 kills while hitting .444 and record 14 digs (a career and match hig), five blocks ( a career high) and two aces. The 32 kills are the second most by a BYU player since the rally scoring era began in 2001. -Victor Batista had 13 kills and 10 blocks. Remember, it's not FOY, it's NOY--i.e., NEWCOMER. Does a former member of the Cuban National team at 22 years old qualify as a newcomer? This is stretching the truth.

It is your first year in college volleyball, so the fact that he plays for the Cuban national team is irrelevant. But sponge13 makes a good point in that he might not qualify. BYU has only 9 matches left. If all are 3 game matches, he won't make it. I figured out that in regular season, he needs 41 more games in the next 9 matches to qualify for AA honors. That averages about 4.5 games per match. This doesn't count post season, as I can't figure out if that qualifies or how many matches they play. But from the looks of it, he might be out for AA honors.

He should be the player of the year, let's see if he can get the ammount of games required to win the award.
Peterson may not want him to play in those matches to calm the other coaches annoyed with BYU having yet another foreign older player who dominates the collegiate game.
