Ohio State Men's Volleyball Falls, 3-1, to No. 2 Brigham Young at Active Ankle Classic
Buckeye John Albertson has a team-high 17.5 points in the loss to the Cougars
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 11th-ranked Ohio State (15-5 overall) men's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (27-30, 30-24, 30-21, 32-30) decision to second-ranked Brigham Young (15-4) Friday night at the Active Ankle Classic hosted by Long Beach State. Buckeye John Albertson (So./Fr., Manchester, Mo.) had a team-high 17.5 points against the Cougars with Stuart Katz (5th/Sr., Port Washington, N.Y.) and Robbie Klein (So./Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) adding 11 points each and Layne Dreven (Sr./Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) 10. Albertson had 13 kills, a solo block and seven assists with Katz adding 11 kills and Klein eight kills and three aces. Dreven contributed 10 kills. BYU's Ivan Perez had a match-high 21.5 points with 18 kills, an ace serve and five assist blocks. Rodrigo Gomes added 15.5 points with 13 kills, two ace serves and an assist block.
From a 1-1 tie in game one, three Cougar errors gave Ohio State a 4-1 lead. At 14-11, a Katz kill and a Klein ace serve gave OSU a five-point lead at 16-11. At 20-16, a Buckeye error and a Yosleyder Cala kill made it 20-18. A Klein kill and an OSU error made it 21-19. A Cougar block by Russell Holmes and Cala tied the game at 21. A Cala kill gave Brigham Young a 22-21 lead. OSU tied the game at 22 with a Katz kill and two Cougar errors gave Ohio State a 24-22 lead. At 27-25, OSU, a Daniel Mathews (So., Shorewood, Wis.) kill made it 28-25. A Buckeye service error cut the lead to two at 28-26. A Katz kill set game point at 29-26. Victor Batista stopped the game point with a kill at 29-27. Klein responded with a kill to give OSU a 30-27 game one win. The Buckeyes hit .471 in the game to .200 for Brigham Young.
Game two opened with a Batista kill and his ace serve to give Brigham Young a 2-0 lead. Ohio State trailed the entire game with a Perez kill ending the game, 30-24, to tie the match at one game each. The Cougars hit .296 for the game to .240 for Ohio State.
Ohio State opened game three with a 4-0 lead from kills by Katz and Albertson and two Brigham Young errors. The Cougars responded with a 6-2 run to tie the game at six with a Gomes kill. Tied at nine, kills by Gomes and Rob Neilson and an OSU error put Brigham Young ahead, 12-9. A Dreven kill and an Albertson-Matthew Hankey (Jr./So., Naperville, Ill.) block cut the Cougar lead to one at 12-11. Brigham Young would maintain a lead, expanding it to nine to win, 30-21, off an OSU service error. The Cougars hit .333 in the game to .120 for Ohio State.
Tied at three in game four, Ohio State scored seven consecutive points to open a 10-3 lead. Brigham Young slowly cut the Buckeye lead to three at 24-21. Two OSU errors and a Batista kill tied the game at 24. An OSU error gave Brigham Young a 25-24 lead. Dreven tied the game at 25 with a kill. Two kills by Perez for BYU and kills from OSU's Sam Stevens (Sr./Jr., Miami, Fla.) and Albertson moved the score to 27-27. A Perez ace serve made it 28-27, BYU. A Batista kill gave Brigham Young a 30-29 lead, serving game match-point two. OSU tied the game at 30 with a Katz kill. Perez, with a kill, made it 31-30, BYU, serving its third match point. A Gomes ace serve closed out the game for Brigham Young at 32-30, for a 3-1 Cougar victory. Ohio State hit .306 in the game to .250 for Brigham Young.
Ohio State out hit Brigham Young, .300 to .266. The Cougars had a 66-55 advantage in kills and an eight-to-four edge in ace serves. Brigham Young gave up 13 service errors to 20 for Ohio State. Defensively, Brigham Young had a 39-23 margin in digs with Perez and Taylor Evans sharing match-high honors for BYU with 10 each. At the net, Ohio State edged the Cougars, 10.5 to 9.5 in team blocks. OSU's Albertson had a match-high eight blocks with a solo and seven assists. OSU setter Mathews recorded a match-high 46 assists while Neilson had 39 and Brian Congelliere added 14 for Brigham Young.
Ohio State will now play host and fifth-ranked Long Beach State (15-6) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. PT in the second day of the Active Ankle Classic.
