Powell's a legit hitter. Really strong. Hard to stop. ----------------------------------------------------------------- uclabruins.collegesports.com/sports/m-volley/recaps/031906aaa.htmlBruins Sweep Visiting Patriots Klosterman and Scheftic shine in victory. March 18, 2006 Box Score: uclabruins.collegesports.com/sports/m-volley/stats/2005-2006/gmu-1.htmlEighth-ranked UCLA handed visiting No. 15 George Mason its fifth defeat of the season Saturday night, winning in three games in a non-conference match for both teams. The Bruins won 30-27, 30-24, 30-28 in 85 minutes to capture their second victory in three matches this week. The Bruins raised their overall record to 14-12, while George Mason fell to 16-5. The Bruins also beat the Patriots for the 10th time in the series without a loss. The victory was unimpressive following Friday night's five-game emotional comeback win against USC. The Bruins hit .258 to the Patriots' .236 and only out-blocked their opponent by half a block. George Mason recorded five more kills than the Bruins. At the service line, UCLA recorded five aces to GMU's one. The Patriots also committed 21 service errors. For the third straight night, junior Steve Klosterman led the Bruins in kills, recording 14 with an ace and two block assists. Senior Nick Scheftic added 11 kills, a career-high of three aces and four block assists for 16 points. Sophomore Libero Tony Ker recorded 10 digs and freshman setter Matt Wade added 34 assists. George Mason's Shaun Powell led all players with 23 kills (.475). The Bruins will take a week off for final exams before hosting Long Beach State (Mar. 31) and UC San Diego (Apr.1) in their final home matches of the season. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. and will be played in the John Wooden Center.

Looks like the offense was all Powell. Not much on paper, at least, from the freshman and sophomore (Gramit & Bates). Hat's off to UCLA. Good luck the rest of the season. Oh well, there's always the FF after Mason knocks off Penn State in the EIVA. Ever the optomist.
