It seems that sentiment against tight and short spandex volley unis is rather widespread in some parts of the country, such as in the heart of Mormon country (Utah), at least as evidenced by this article, "What's the deal with spandex?" (with a whopping 122 comments): www.deseretnews.com/article/705260176/Whats-the-deal-with-spandex.htmlOf course, much of the commentary against the spandex unis is from parents. Players are almost uniformly for them, and coaches mostly so. There were claims that some players either quit volleyball or didn't take it up, because they didn't want to wear the spandex unis. Some, it seems, would prefer if volleyball was played wearing bloomers.

Its not only a mormon sentiment... there are Xn schools both college and hs that will not allow their team - or another team competing in their gym in some cases - to wear them...

What she's saying is that she thinks most of the girls and coaches she talked to about the subject are lying to her. Because if she wouldn't want to wear spandex, then why would they? Spandex most definitely does not flatter me, but I wear it when bike riding because it is the most efficient, most comfortable, best option.

Many spandex cows will have to die in order to fit me in spandex.

It is interesting to hear what are likely religious conservatives adopting what is feminist rhetoric in their fight against the "spandexation" of America: "...the majority have major self image issues. It is getting even worse because the athletes are wearing them at a younger age....I'm embarassed to see our sweet young girls feel they have to sell themselves out to be sex objects first, athletes last....it's so hard to have a positive body image as a high school girl....One girl barely had her butt cheek covered....Spandex, maybe, but does it have to be so short it barely covers your butt and who-who?....If the girls were just standing around it would not be that bad, but they are putting them selves in very provocative postions on the court..., etc. One thing not brought up in the article or any of the comments is the contribution the sport makes to the positive body image of tall girls. There is nothing wrong with the human body, just the way we look at it. The Chinese, known for being a little puritanical are definitely on the anti-spandex side: ![](http://english.people.com.cn/200609/03/images/volleyball1.jpg)

The two players are wearing practice shorts. The Chinese, Japanese and Korean teams definitely don't wear spandex, but the shorts they do wear are closer to spandex than say Michael Jordan style shorts.

It's so established in the sport now, I think most players would feel awkward not wearing them. Besides that, I where Under Armour compression shorts under my basketball shorts, and even have REI hip and butt-padded compression shorts for snowboarding, they just feel waaay better for athletic activity.
I also think it's unfair to just single out volleyball, why not go after gymnastics, swimming, and even football? Yes, they wear tight clothing for performance purposes, but so does volleyball.
I know it's different strokes for different folks, but this is the 21st century after all.

One needs look no further than at Track & Field - men and women. Nothing is left to the imagination. Almost like in the Ancient Greek days when sports and athletics were an homage to the beauty of the human body. It's modern puritans who have tainted everything with their guilt-ridden smutty minds.

Yeah, you're right: ![](http://eng.tibet.cn/Features2008/2008olympic/china/200808/W020080824485627445962.jpg) Might not many women when asked, understate their size, preferring to wear one size too small, under the idea that the tighter the clothing the thinner they look? In other words, vanity will win out over modesty most of the time. Granted, others would prefer to go the "baggy" route (two sizes too big), but not althletes in most cases, I'd presume.

And you can add...wrestling, and most of the ice/snow sports outside of hockey. And they cover more than what the players would be wearing if they were walking down the beach. And what really irks me is that the people that speak out against spandex...tend to have no issues with the other sports mentioned...and rarely say a word about the same institutions cheerleader/dance team outfits which sometimes cover less, and are there for no performance reason. Fact is...they're light, stay out of the way (no short bunching while in S/R), they help manage body heat (whisking sweat away) and they're less likely to slide down when sliding on the floor.

Would they prefer this? ![](http://www.acefitness.org/newsletters/archive/2009-11-top25fitnessappareltrends/thong.jpg) Covers more, but is more revealing. The Aussie women's basketball players in the last Olympics wore a pretty revealing spandex singlet: ![](http://oglympics.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/jackson_end_gallery__417x550.jpg) Once again, covers more, but is more revealing. Is basically like they sprayed the uniform on.

More revealing? That unisuit reveals precisely nothing.

Hello all. Remember me?
Just thought I'd check back in quickly. It's been more than 3 years since I made this post (wow!) and I'm happy to report that all is well. My daughter has stuck with the game and is now very productive member of her HS team. While I feel kind of silly about this post from way back at the beginning of it all...I do still feel a little awkward about my daughter wearing spandex. But I get that it's really not a popular avenue of conversation.
Cheers.
