Wilton leaving Muise home for team’s California swing
Coach Mike Wilton said libero Jake Muise will not make the Hawaii volleyball team's upcoming road trip.
The Warriors travel to Southern California for Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches against No. 1 UC Irvine and No. 5 Long Beach State.
Muise started Hawaii's first six matches but struggled with his passing. He did not start last Friday's match against Stanford. Freshman Matt Motter and junior Arri Jeschke will be on Hawaii's travel roster.
"I can only take one libero," Wilton said.
"I've got two other guys that can play the position. If I had Arri Jeschke on Friday night, he would have been out on the court but he was ill."
Sophomore Delano Thomas and senior Eyal Zimet will make this trip though both are dealing with injuries.
Thomas sprained his right thumb in Friday's loss to Stanford. He has been fitted for an aquaplast brace (a splint that is molded to his thumb) and will practice with it this week.
Zimet is suffering from lower back spasms.
Warriors trainer Michelle Landis said Zimet's condition is listed as day-to-day but the Warriors' captain will travel in hopes that he can play. Zimet can also be used as a libero.
The Warriors are permitted to take 12 players. Friday's 5 p.m. match against UCI has been moved to the Bren Events Center.
Stanford's Curt Toppel was named the MPSF Player of the Week.
Meanwhile, the AVCA released its rankings today and as expected, Hawaii flip-flopped with UC Irvine.
The Warriors dropped to No. 2 after splitting the MPSF conference series with No. 10 Stanford last week. The Cardinal moved up one spot after being ranked 11th last week. Hawaii received two of the 16 first-place votes.
UC Irvine (9-0) took over the top spot after remaining unbeaten with two victories against UC San Diego.
