Hosts are detemined a few years in advanced. This year the Final Four at Penn ST. The 3 conferences send their tournament winners to the Final Four. The 4th team is an at-large bid given to the best team determined by a committee that did not win a conference tournament, usually the west coast runner up.

I'd like a b-ball setup better, with the conference touney and the NCAA finals separate. (though I don't know how well v-ball 'may madness' would catch on)

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
There aren't the number of teams to have too big of a tournament. There is talk of an 8 team format next year. I am not sure exactly how many autmoatic berths there will be and from where.
Also it isn't too different from basketball in the sense that all conference tournament winners get an automatic berth to the NCAAs and the remaining spots are filled with at-large berths. The difference is that the NCAA tournament is only 3 teams big in vb.

From a very reliable source, there will not be an eight-team tournament next and quite possibly not until 2010. It was voted down by the NCAA Championships cabinet.

^That blows...
I'd me more than happy to watch an extra round of v-ball.
Considering an 11 seed is going to the final four in b-ball, I'd like to see 5 at-large bids rather than just 1. You really never know in tournament play, and there are definitely more than 4 legitamate teams in NCAA volleyball.

Someone posted seeding as the wildcard seeded 4th. Not accurate. A committee will seed as usual. From page 6 of handbook: Pairings and Match Times Pairings and seedings for the National Collegiate Men’s Volleyball Championship will be established by the committee once the teams are selected. The committee will determine the order and time of matches. Any changes must first be approved by the NCAA Men’s Volleyball Committee. The No. 1-seeded team will play the No. 4-seeded team, and the No. 2-seeded team will play the No. 3-seeded team. The full handbook can be found here: www.ncaa.org/library/handbooks/volleyball/2006/2006_m_volleyball_handbook.pdf
