Volleyball tries to snap three-game skid tonight Maximillian Del Rey The No. 12 USC men's volleyball team hosts No. 4 Pepperdine tonight at 7 p.m. in the Lyon Center.
The Trojans (10-14, 6-12 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) have lost three matches in a row. The Waves (13-5, 13-5) last played Saturday, when they lost, 3-1, to No. 1 UC Irvine.
Pepperdine has won the last nine contests between the two teams; USC's last victory over the Waves came on April 3, 2001.
"(The Waves) are one of the biggest teams, as far as height goes, in the country. (USC) has been one of the smallest," USC coach Turhan Douglas said. "That is something that we have to deal with, and it's difficult because (they have) a taller group of guys and they're able to patrol the net really well."
Pepperdine's 6-foot-11 senior middle blocker Andy Hein leads NCAA Division I-II in hitting percentage, averaging .523. The Waves are led in total kills by 6-foot-7 outside hitters freshman Paul Carroll and junior John Parfitt, who have 251 and 259, respectively.
"USC's advantage (in this match) is defense and ball control," Douglas said. "That's what we've been working all week to prepare. They might hit over us, but we have to dig (those shots) out and play our game."
The Trojans will be without sophomore middle blocker Andrew Vernon, who is battling knee soreness resulting from preseason surgery, tonight, and for the rest of the season. Though Vernon has played in 18 of USC's 24 matches thus far, his rehabilitation is ongoing, Douglas said, and his readiness to play had to be evaluated on a game-by-game basis.
After Vernon struggled to get through Saturday's UCLA match, Douglas said that the decision was quickly made to shut him down for the rest of the season.
"For us to continue with him and take a chance of blowing his knees out for good wasn't smart," Douglas said. "That's a huge loss for us."
Sophomore Chris Jones will start in his place.

I'm glad they're going to the Lyon Center for this match. SC should play all their matches there. It might be moot for next year when they move into the new Gallen Center. That little dinky North Gym has got to go! (home court advantage and all, and that so-called home court advantage hasn't done them a lick of good anyway. Might as well make it comfortable for spectators. Maybe more will show up!) SC should focus on a quick game to get past those tall trees Pepperdine puts up there. Quick to the middles and quick to the outsides. Don't let them put up their great walls. I say Pepp in 4.

Southern California Shocks Pepperdine in Three
3/24/2006 -LOS ANGELES – Juan Figueroa had 17 kills and C.J. Schellenberg added 15 kills to lead the No. 12-ranked USC men’s volleyball team to a 30-28, 30-22, 30-28 upset sweep over No. 4 Pepperdine in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Friday (March 24) in USC’s Lyon Center.
The win was the Trojans’ first over Pepperdine since 2001, snapping their 9-match losing skid to the Waves. It also was USC’s first win over an opponent ranked as high as fourth since Troy beat No. 4 Lewis in 2003.
USC improved to 11-14 overall and 7-12 in the MPSF, while the Waves fell to 13-6 overall (the same as their MPSF record).
Schellenberg hit .464 in the match and added five digs, while Figueroa had five digs, five blocks and two aces. Teammate Joao Grangeiro had nine kills, seven digs and two aces, Chris Jones added six blocks in a rare start and Matt Mosko had 5 blocks. Luke Morris had eight digs and Jimmy Killian had 39 assists and 4 blocks for USC.
For Pepperdine, John Parfitt had 16 kills and seven digs, Jon Grobe had 12 kills and seven digs, Tom Hulse had seven blocks and both Andy Hein and Jonathan Winder had five blocks.
USC hit .238 to Pepperdine’s .171. The Waves had 13 service errors to USC’s six.
The Trojans had Pepperdine on the ropes throughout the first game, building a 2-point lead at 15-13 and then at 25-23 before the Waves scored three unanswered points to forge ahead at 27-26. But USC scored the next three points and ended the game on a combo block by Mosko and Killian. USC took advantage of Pepperdine’s 5 serving errors in the game (Troy had none). In the second game, USC broke a 10-10 tie with back-to-back points and then steadily pulled away. The Trojans hit .276 in that game to Pepperdine’s .027 and also had 6.5 blocks. USC opened up a 6-0 lead in the third game behind a pair of Grangeiro aces and then built the margin to 10 points at 15-5 before Pepperdine slowly crept back. It was 28-22 USC when the Waves scored six of the next seven points to pull within one, but USC ended the match on a Schellenberg kill. Pepperdine used nine blocks in that game to threaten the Trojans.

Awesome win for USC!!! Seems like they have made some major imporvements in a fairly short time frame. I'd say their program is definitely on the upswing.

Best I have seen USC play this year. It has been a long time since they played so well TOGETHER AS A TEAM. Also was impressed again with Carrol, the freshman from Pepperdine. USC should look at Australia and see if there are anymore players of his caliber looking for schools in the states. Pepperdine stopped fighting mid way through game two.

It is great to hear USC starting to play well
Hmmm, should I tee this up or not...... but I can't resist...
Hey pepperdoody, I think Pepperdine must be drinking the same water as Ball State this past month... they can't seem to win against the good teams and now has lost to an up n coming team....
Remember, you are in troll status with 75% warning...
Just kidding.........
