Mahwah, NJ: The #1 seeded Roadrunners of Ramapo College were crowned the 2006 ECAC Men’s Volleyball Champions at the Bradley Center in Mahwah defeating #3 New Jersey City University, 3-1 (30-21, 27-30, 30-26, 30-25). Ramapo wraps up the year standing at 25-9 overall while NJCU finishes 20-8.
Finals: In their fifth match-up of the season, Ramapo came out on top earning the three-peat for the season and the 2006 ECAC Men’s Volleyball South Championship Crown. This was Ramapo’s second straight ECAC Championship defeating Mt. St. Vincent in 2005, 3-1. Sophomore opposite Brendan Whitford (Lyndhurst, NJ) was named the tournament Most Valuable Player after posting his second double-double of the day with 29 kills and 14 digs. Whitford added three blocks in the championship match while rookie Shane Donohue (Freehold Twp., NJ) led the team in blocks with four total. Donohue added 24 kills on 48 attempts and David Ross (Perth Amboy, NJ) posted 25 kills of his own on 48 attempts. As a team the Roadrunners hit down 82 kills on 169 attempts hitting .320 over NJCU’S .259. NJCU recorded 64 kills on 166 attempts with 21 errors. Ramapo’s junior setter Jordan Roldan (Jersey City, NJ) dished out 73 assists and defensive specialist Richard Alvarado (West New York, NJ) led the defense with 15 digs. Dan Sempkowski (East Brunswick, NJ) recorded 12 digs and Roldan added 11.
For the Gothic Knights, Carlos Ducos (Passaic, NJ) led the way hitting .342 with 18 kills on 38 attempts while Damon LaSalle (Clifton, NJ), Kevin Rodgers (Clifton, NJ), and Robert Griffiths (Edison, NJ) posted 16, 11, and 11 kills respectively. Junior setter Maurice Washington (Orlando, FL) dished out 55 assists while leading the defense with ten digs. Rodgers posted ten digs of his own.
Semi-Final Match-Ups: In the semi-final match-ups, the #4 seeded Raptors of Bard College took the #1 seeded Roadrunners to five games falling short, 3-2 (31-29, 26-30, 36-34, 28-30, 13-15). Bard was eliminated from the tournament while the #2 seeded Bearcats of Baruch College were also eliminated falling 3-2 (26-30, 34-36, 30-26, 30-20, 6-15) to the #3 seeded Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University.
Court #1: Ramapo 3, Bard 2 The Roadrunners fell behind two games to one before tying the match at two games a piece and taking the match with a 15-13 game five victory. The Roadrunners were led by Donohue who posted 29 kills on 57 attempts hitting .404 while Whitford recorded 18 kills on 36 attempts. Whitford hit .333 in the win and Ross hit down 15 kills. Tom Kohler (East Brunswick, NJ) and Nicholas Kalbach (Old Bridge, NJ) each added ten kills while Roldan led the defense with 14 digs. Donohue and Whitford posted 12 and ten digs respectively. Roldan dished out a team high 70 assists. Colin Safranek (Santa Cruz, CA) of Bard recorded 30 kills and Zachary Hamaker (Walnut Creek, CA) posted 25 leading the team. Dylan Cummings (Aptos, CA) dished out a team high 54 assists and Safranek led the defense with 14 digs. Cummings added 13 digs in the loss. Bard hit .222 as a team with 75 kills on 189 attempts with 33 errors while Ramapo posted 87 kills on 196 attempts with 29 errors hitting .296.
Court #2: NJCU 3, Baruch 2 New Jersey City defeated Baruch College in the second semi-final match-up behind Rodgers who posted 24 kills and 13 digs. Ducos followed with 18 kills and four digs while Griffiths posted 12 of his own. Washington dished out a team high 60 assists. Baruch was led by Greg Waldvogel (West Hempstead, NY) with 23 kills and ten digs while Steven Rouse (New York, NY) posted 21 kills and five total blocks in the loss. King Chen (Great Neck, NY) dished out a team high 77 assists while adding seven digs.
