I think we have already had this conversation - see thread on page 2 or 3?
As for FOY, the player has to have played in 2/3's of the games that their team played - not matches - games, so that leaves out a few players.
Tyler Hildebrand and Duncan Budinger from LBSU are certainly top candidates. Matt McKinney might play in enough games to be a candidate - he started playing on January 23rd, but has missed a few matches since then with tendinitis. Who else is a true freshman that will have played in enough games to be considered? Pedro Azehna?

Certainly Tyler and Duncan... But what about Tarr? He provided an instant spark into this team... I'm glad he's playing now! GO BEACH!!!

I don't know that Tarr has played enough this season that I would put him as a real candidate for FOY. He's good, but he hasn't been so dominant since he started playing that it would make up for the time he was on the bench (just my opinion). I think the other two Beachies are more likely candidates.

The rules say they have to have played in 2/3's of all games, so I don't think Tarr will be eligible by the end of the regular season - if it included post-season, then maybe. He is doing what the coaches asked him to do and he is very happy to be out there contributing - that is enough.
Tyler is leading the nation in assists per game - not just leading the other freshman setters - so he is making a good case for himself as FOY. I would vote for him ;D

I agree that Robert Tarr should be considered a FOY candidate. He also gets my vote because of the patience he had in sitting on the bench, then burning his redshirt with 40% of the season gone. He gave up 40% of his collegiate playing time all the while, I'm sure, knowing within himself that he could contribute. And when he hit the floor for his first match he was the dominant contributor. He gets many brownie points in my book for that.
Also, I think Tarr came in before McKinney did. He's another guy who gets the same kind of kuddos from me. He too came on strong in his first match. Seems to me that there are more freshmen than usual this year who are being major forces on their respective teams this year.

George Masons true freshman middle hitter Matt Steinfurth from coastal va is an amazing player and leader on the court....a dominating force in the middle..surprising considering he must weigh only 150 pounds....great great player..look out!

McKinney played his first UCLA volleyball match against Long Beach on January 23rd. He hasn't played in every match since then. He was out for a few because of tendinitis.

Andy Hein at Pepperdine is drawing some attention to the other teams when all of a sudden Pepperdine doesn't only have one good blocking rotation with Brad Keenan up front . Take a good look at Hein's accomplishments after coming in when Webb broke his foot. Webb is now milking the injury so his ego won't be hurt when he comes back and doesn't get his job back. ( probably never will )( get his job back )

The fact that Long Beach State, the current #4 ranked team in the country who wasn't even found anywhere near the top 10 at the beginning of the season, has a freshman setter named Tyler Hildebrand is pretty awesome. Tyler has to be a legitimate FOY candidate at this point in time. However, I suspect that his ability to be FOY will hinge in significant part on how successful Long Beach State is the remainder of the season...

hey vbdog, you are right on, i know that andy webb's foot was completely healed three weeks ago, he is just too scared to ever play the sport again, so he is gonna pretend he is hurt the rest of the season, just to protect his ego, you must be the pepperdine trainer or doctor to know that he is "milking it". he didnt know anyone else knew about that

( probably never will )( get his job back ) After watching Hein play against Hawaii this season, I too was impressed by his turn out. First night he had 13 kills and hit for .579 with 6 BA and the second night, he had 9 kills and hit for .375 with 8 BA. Those aren't too shabby stats for someone basically coming off the bench.

Milking a broken foot after five weeks? Hmmm. How long does a broken foot take to heal? My recollection is that it takes a couple of months. BY the way, what exactly did he break? Perhaps EP can post the x-rays here.
More power to Andy Hein. In the mean time, maybe poster EP can identify himself Saturday night in Malibu. How about running a lap around the court carrying a big caricature of Webb milking a cow? After all, he is a Wisconsin boy!
Where is EP's team ranked?

Correction
VBdog was the orthopedic poster, not EP. Is VBdog's team rated? Have they played Pepperdine yet? Was VBdog recruited by Pepperdine?
