Nick Scheftic, a 6-11 senior middle blocker for eighth-ranked UCLA (16-12, 8-10 MPSF), has been chosen the Sports Imports/AVCA Division I-II Men’s National Player of the WeekSM. Scheftic led the Bruins to a sweep of sixth-ranked Long Beach State on March 31 and a four-game win over UC San Diego on April 1. He averaged 4.75 points, 3.67 kills, 1.17 blocks, 0.50 digs and 0.5 aces per game while hitting .500 in six games. Scheftic provided the UCLA offense with 11 kills versus Long Beach State with a .444 attack percentage. He added three consecutive aces in the first game versus the 49ers, along with two blocks for the match to help secure the win. Scheftic, playing just three of the four games versus UC San Diego, totaled 11 kills with a .550 attack percentage on 20 swings. He added five block assists and two digs in the victory. Scheftic holds season averages of 3.48 points, 2.8 kills, 0.94 blocks and 0.18 aces per game with a .410 cumulative hitting percentage. UCLA moved up in the MPSF standings into a tie for seventh place with four league matches remaining. Scheftic is the 13th Bruin to receive the national honor and the first time since Paul Johnson earned the award on Jan. 24, 2005. The UCLA head coach is Al Scates.

Well deserved honor for Nick Scheftic who had a monster match against Long Beach, and again against UCSD. He has steadily improved and worked hard on his game.
