I think the practice schedule time has much to do with the player's class schedule. If most of your players have evening classes then it would make sense to have practice in the mornings. If your players have morning and early afternoon classes then it makes sense to run practice's later that evening. Its hard to run practice when a third of your team is at class.

I don't see the reason that Penn State would need to practice at 7am. In general, DI athletes organize their classes around practice. I guess the coaching staff saw an advantage to 7am practice, whatever that may be.

Well when classes run from 730 am to 930 pm its hard to get everyone on the same time frame if you let kids pick classes whenever they want. so what happens is the coach will say, Next sememester we are practicing mornings so the kids know not to take any classes before noon or so. Then the kids will be in the gym from 630 or so till about 10, then go to class all day. Also i know that Penn State has a Girls team so they might switch mornings and afternoons each semester with the girls team, so first semester the girls will go early and the boys late, and then switch the next semester.

Oh, and Idiotic, its hard to organize classes "Around" practice when your in the gym for 5-6 hours a day. You have to do one in the morning and then one in the afternoon and night.

Having morning practices and switching times around each year/sememster is not uncommon at all. Remember that some classes are only offered in certain sememsters or certain times. Coaches are usually sensitive to this and will inform the players when the practice times will be. Most coaches will also inform players that they will be switching a practice time around to allow seniors the flexibility of taking a certain class. I recall reading about a school that would cater the practice sessions around the juniors and/or seniors. The coach would ask the incoming juniors or seniors if there is a class they need to take for the upcoming year that may only be offered at a certain time or semester. The coach will then make practices around those player's schedules and the incoming freshman and sophomores would adjust their schedule when it came to signing up for their classes.

Pretty sure the year that PSU won the National Championship they had gone with 6am workouts. Corret me if I'm wrong but I think Pavlik was an asst. coach then
Although is could be because of scheduling I could find some merit in the morning workouts.

We were always taught that you practice when you play. I guess PSU has morning games.
I heard from PSU players there was emergency re-scheduling of their already selected classes to this morming slot because the coaches couldn't find babysitters at the usual 3pm time. But college guys are always up early anyway.....right?

Also another theory might be, especially if your team has some students that aren't motivated to get out of bed to go to class, they will already be up and therefore attendance in classes will increase which will directly correlate to better grades.

I'm sure that PSU scheduled morning practice because both coaches have kids under 3 years old and dont sleep that much anyway. I would say it is working but just take a look at how many injuries PSU has had this year. Do you think it is because, the kids arent getting their sleep???
How dumb can Pavlik be, do you really think that 18-23 year olds are going to go to bed at 9:00pm in order to get there rest...NO!
Every year its something new with this man. This has been going on since 1995, something always falls apart, but I guess he is happy never winning a final 4 game. Its really sad for the true fans who have been going to the games like I have for the past 8 years or so.
