NO. 1 UC IRVINE SWEEPS STANFORD, 3-0
Stanford, Calif. -- Topped-ranked UC Irvine swept Stanford, 3-0 (30-28, 30-18, 30-19) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Burnham Pavilion Saturday.
In a tight game one with the score tied 24-24, UCI scored four straight on two kills by David Smith, a service ace by Steffin Rangel and a Cardinal attack error to go up 28-24. Stanford would answer on a 4-1 spurt to narrow the score to 29-28, but a Cardinal service error gave UCI the game 30-28.
UCI rolled to a 30-18 victory in game two and a 30-19 win in game three.
The Anteaters improve to 25-3 on the year and 18-2 in MPSF action. The Anteaters rolled to their 18th consecutive win. Stanford falls to 4-22 overall and 2-18 in league play.
Jayson Jablonsky led UCI with 15 kills and four aces. Opposite Matt Webber followed with 14 kills and six digs. Middle blocker David Smith had seven kills, while outside hitter Steffin Rangel added five kills and a career-high eight digs. Setter Brian Thornton tallied 38 assists, five digs and three block assists.
The Anteaters topped Stanford at the net 10.0-7.5 and out-hit the Cardinal .330-.101.
Stanford was paced by Ben reddy with a match-high 18 kills. Brian Lindberg totaled a team-high seven digs.
