He was a freshman setter (bench) at Pepperdine last year. I heard he transferred out to another college by returning to his home state and is currently out of volleyball. I don't know what happened to him at Pepperdine to motivate him to transfer out. I saw him play at a tournament a while back and was impressed. But that was a long time ago. Does anyone know what happened to him?

He went home last summer and decided not to return to Pepperdine. We saw him at ECC last year and had no idea he was considering leaving Pepp. It is a shame!
Rumor is that he missed his girlfriend too much - don't know if that is true or not.

Bryan did not fit in with the Pepp team, was a loner. He was the default setter in Fall 2001 but was then soundly beaten out by Beau Daniels. Everthing sort of declined from there.
By the way, UVA has no men's VB program.

How good are these club teams? I remember when Arizona came to Hawaii last year and Hawaii swept them. They were good but no where near the talent that UH has. It looked like the Hawaii women against a mid-level WAC team. I hate to be too critical because I know that they are only a club team and they do this for without scholarships and all. But how does a player make that jump from NCAA to international v. club to international?

Some club teams are funded better than D-1 teams and can give money to players. From the time you start school you have 7 years of eligibility even with club teams so some guys go to Arizona to keep playing volleybal

i play club ball because i love volleyball. i was recruited by some east coast schools, but had shoulder surgery during my senior year of HS and basically fell off the face of the earth. sucks but ohh well. i dunno if this does you any justice as to how good club teams are, but there was a tournament at the university of colorado one or two weekends ago. zona was there, and the obvious favorite. they played pierce JC in the semi's and lost. pierce JC then went on to play indiana in the finals, and indiana won. i've never seen pierce JC play, but i've seen indiana play. pretty legit. indiana actually beat zona in a match the night before too. from what i hear this is a down year for zona. i know two guys who used to play for them. one actually went to pacific before he transferred to zona. i was talkin to another guy last year who played there and supposedly their opposite went to zona over stanford. as for the jump to international, i think that's a bit much. do you mean international as in national teams or going over seas to play? i'd be more than happy to discuss this any further, so if you have any more questions, ask away..........

Club is what happens when schools don't have men's vb because of title IX. Most club teams play 20-25 matches, travel within their region and then go to the NIRSA nationals. Last year over 130 men's teams participated. This year's NIRSA Nationals are in Columbus.
The interest in men's vb is there, as shown by the number of participating teams. A lot of the players are former JO players who either weren't recruited by varsity programs or decided that choice of school was more important than vb.

Good, I am glad there are those on this board who dont mind my ignorance about club vball. ;D As far as international, I guess a little of both would be interesting. If a club player makes the jump from club to overseas, I can see that happening and a player being relatively comfortable. But the jump to the national team doesn't seem so easy. Again, dont know too much about this so I am guessing based solely on the one club team I have ever seen play. I know Arizona is suppose to be one of those top club teams and they pushed Hawaii that year, but the match was really never in question. To parallel the women, its like watching a top 5 team beat up on a "bubble" NCAA team. There will be spots of brilliance but you know who is going to win the match.

Hey halesvb11, you mean Blacksburg(Hokies) is better than Charlottesville (Wahoos)?
John Kosty's brother: Chris (?) used to play for Hawaii then left to play overseas and then played for Arizona.
Also Riley Salmon from Pierce plays for the US National Team as well as overseas.
That former Pacific player now on the Arizona club team is Kuchenbecker? Her sister played for the Cardinal until 1998.

yes. blacksburg is better than charlottesville, hands down. end of discussion on this topic and no, the player that went from pacific to zona that i was talkin about was kevin jones. as far as varsity teams "always" (used loosely) being favored, that may be right. always winning, not sure about that. if i remember right, the year that BYU won the NCAA's, i think they lost to utah valley in a preseason tournament/match. utah valley was up there with zona as far as club teams go. UVSC's best player actually plays at BYU now. i've never heard of anyone who has played solely club going overseas to play.
