I'd take Loyola or Ohio State.

Grudgingly take, mind you. I was all about the MIVA when Deuser had his glory run--FBarretto, JMartins, GMeyer, KMiller, JElsea, RStuntz...JSoler off the bench. That was one hell of a team. They lost 42-44 to BYU in the opening game...AWESOME MATCH. Too bad all the magic left the MIVA when they stripped the Flyers...hasn't been the same since

The Lewis freshman should be peaking in about 3 years or so.

Say what you want about Dueser, but didn't his team return to the Final Four the following year in 2004 WITHOUT any of the so called "cheaters"?? Um, yeah, i think so! How do all of the other MISERABLE coaches and programs in the MIVA explain that? I think Lewis also put on a great show in Hawaii one year at the Final Four, losing a barn burner to UCLA in a 3 hour 5 game match. Dueser's teams had magic, there is no doubt about it. The fact that he lost Martins and Meyer in 2004 and took his back up setter, and a Freshman OH, and 2 new MB's and still wiped the floor with Ohio State, Ball State and IPFW in the MIVA tournament just proved that Dueser didn't need any cheating to out coach those chumps. I agree with you "fingrbustr" the MIVA HAS NO MAGIC, and won't get anywhere anymore. Who really cares who wins the MIVA, they will get TROUNCED at the Final Four.

Deuser is a great coach, no doubt--I second that Ucant. Him leaving (being ousted, really) was a major loss for Midwest vball. He's a nice guy too, to boot. Did you read the article I posted about Rhodes' brother being blown off by an unnamed PSU coach? DD would NEVER do that...he's about as nice as they come. I agree, Ucant--who cares!

Deuser is severly missed in the MIVA, and while any coach has their flaws, Deush could do two things:
1. Recruit 2. Teach his teams how to side out at a very high level.
There were players, legal mind you, that came to Lewis that no other Midwest program had any chance in getting. Cali, and Hawaii kids actually started to come to the Midwest. People liked Dave, and he would do anything for his players. His players actually were his best recruiters! Do anything for his players...I know insert lewd joke or cheater comment here, but it was seriously true, he helped them out all the time. There are some bitter members of the LU family out there, that ultimately led to his downfall, and they need to let some stuff go, but the guy cared, and was passionate. It is sad that he is not coaching college anymore.
It is disgraceful that Midwest teams can't beat the 8th or even 9th best team in the West, and are losing regularly to NAIA schools!!! These midwest coaches, don't have a clue about recruiting or coaching. They are too old, complacent and things are getting stale and stagnant. This conference needs a major shake up/youth injection to get some passion back in these schools, or we can expect many more years to come where the top ranked team in the MIVA doesn't have a prayer against the West.

He did great things with his program. But the larger point you make is true: the midwest is lacking this year. No one is going to seriously challenge the West Coast this year, as some teams have done in the past. I think Penn State should join the MIVA to raise the level of play in the conference.

I probably respect the 2004 Lewis team more, simply because they were an OK team (without Meyer) that season that made a great run in the playoffs beating 3 of the top 4 seeds as the 5 seed. When it really did matter, Lewis played the best.
