UC Irvine (25-3) remained in the top spot for the fifth straight week after collecting 15 of the 16 first-place votes. Hawai’i (21-4), which received the other remaining first-place vote, moved up to second followed the Matadors (18-8) in third. BYU (18-6) dropped two spots to fourth followed by Long Beach State (19-9) in fifth. Pepperdine (15-7) dropped to sixth this week followed by UCLA (18-12), UC Santa Barbara (13-13), Loyola-Chicago (20-6) and Penn State (17-7) rounds out this week’s top 10. Spots 11-15 this week are occupied by USC (11-17), IPFW (18-6), George Mason (21-5), Ball State (20-5) and Ohio State (17-11). The Matadors are ranked fourth in the latest Molten/Volleyball Men’s Top 10 poll released Apr. 10.
MATADORS TAKE ON FIRST TOP-RANKED TEAM THIS SEASON With UC Irvine’s trip to Northridge on Wednesday, the Anteaters will be the first top-ranked team the Matadors have faced this season. Irvine was ranked third when the two teams met in February. Since 2003, Northridge is 2-6 against teams ranked at the top of the AVCA poll with the Matadors’ last win over a number one team coming in 2003 when Northridge upset No. 1 UC Irvine and new No. 1 Hawai’i in back-to-back matches.
CAMPBELL PICKS UP 125TH CAREER WIN IN 3-0 VICTORY OVER USC Matador head coach Jeff Campbell picked up his 125th career win in Northridge’s three-game win over No. 10 USC on Friday. After opening his Matador career with a combined 14-35 record over his first two seasons (1998-99), Campbell is now 111-90 (.552) since the 2000 season and 74-45 (.622) since the 2003 season. With 13 more wins, Campbell will pass Walt Ker and move into second place on the all-time Cal State Northridge coaching wins list behind John Price.
TOURNAMENT SCENARIOS With two wins this week, the Matadors would finish the 22-match MPSF regular season with a 15-7 record. With a pair of BYU losses at Hawai’i and a Pepperdine loss at home to USC, Northridge would finish third in the standings and host the sixth-place team. By splitting its two matches this week, the Matadors would finish 14-8 and could finish no higher than fourth but could still host a quarterfinal match. With a pair of losses this week, Northridge could slip to sixth depending on Long Beach State’s final two match results. The top two teams and teams 7-8 have been decided but the order of finish is still in question. UC Irvine and Hawai’i are both in the running for first and UCLA and Santa Barbara are battling to host the 7-8 play-in match.
