NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU CAN HIT A BALL. The UC system has some of the toughest requirments out there when it comes to academics. Patak knowing that went to UCSB, I'm not sure where SB lands academically in the UC system but tough is tough. Make the effort to be there for your teammmates and most of all yourself. He let more than just his team and school down, he let himself down, but that's my opinion. I think people walk on reallllllly thin ice when they try to pontificate about things of which they know nothing and can only express an opinion which serves to denigrate a pretty good kid. Give it all a rest. It's up to him and the team to reconcile, not a bunch of people who are out of the loop and can only guess. UCSB can be surprisingly good when they feed the ball around to their other hitters. They are not to be taken lightly at all tomorrow.

The ONLY exception is Stanford ( check out their record this year ) 2 - 20 ouch, and lost to UCSD in the last game of the season. Not to split hairs, but I believe UCSD also requires players to earn admission based strictly on academic qualifications.

LET'S GET THIS RIGHT ! They both goofed up , but in my opinion the coach is just as responsible as the player , HE has the whole program to think about and if one player let's HIM down HE also let everyone down !!! Not according to the coach. Here's a quote from today's paper: Outlook: The Gauchos have imploded since the nation's kill leader, opposite Evan Patak, was declared academically ineligible two weeks ago. Patak averaged 5.88 kills per game, and received nearly 80 percent more sets than any other teammate. "Evan dropped the ball," coach Ken Preston said. "He was very irresponsible." www.honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060419/SPORTS0202/604190340/1032/SPORTS...and another: "The NCAA made a rule across the board that athletes had to pass six units to be eligible the following term," UCSB coach Ken Preston said. "It is a raw deal for schools on the quarter system, which we are, but Evan was very irresponsible and let everyone down. He only passed five units." starbulletin.com/2006/04/19/sports/story02.htmlIt is the player's responsibility to pass the necessary classes. A typical academic load is 15 units so expecting a player to pass 6, even when in season, is not unrealistic at all. It is an interesting point about schools on the quarter system vs. semester system. In the case of a semester system, the student is in one semester during the season. If less than 6 units are passed in the Spring semester, the result would not be known until after the season was over, unlike the quarter system.

Preston needs to get a reality check , If he is only passing 5 units , is it a pattern

Preston needs to get a reality check , If he is only passing 5 units , is it a pattern I'll side with you on this one... I can't imagine a coach blatantly bashing one of HIS players publically in a newspaper article.... that shows zero class. Yes Patak didn't pass enough classes, but Patak was recruited to go to UCSB, who the hell knows what his academic skills are.... school isn't for everyone... The coach should have had someone with the team or the athletic department monitoring grades throughout the term so that this sort of thing doesn't happen... get him a tutor, force him to skip a practice to work on homework... Preston is simply mad at Evan Patak for making him look bad as a coach... from his completly non-supportive comments, he obviously doesn't care about Evan as a person... www.firekenpreston.com <---- anyone up for creating this site?

Wow! Never would have thought a coach would attack his player so plublicly like that. Those comments are absolutely classless. I almost thought those quotes were fabricated because I couldn't believe he would say something like that, but then wait a second quote and references!! Ubelieveable! If I was Patak I'd kick Preston's ass, straight up. I'd be willing to visit that site www.firekenpreston.com if it was made!!

I'm w/ you, miva. Evan Patak is a big freakin' person. He's basically the size of Elton Brand (maybe more nowadays, since Brand slimmed down to 250 or so). Can't wait for the next media clip to be, "UCSB All-American volleyball player breaks coach's nose" Gaucho vball coaching on both sides (Preston and Gregory) is imploding as we speak.

I was commenting on the fact that Evan let not only his teammates down but himself by letting his grades slide.

Ok, ok, so the coach made a mistake and he should of left the statement at "Evan didn't complete the required amount of hours (PERIOD)" No comment.
Now about the coach following the academic side ......you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink. Coaches are NOT BABYSITTERS! It is time athletes, students, citizens of America, and the WORLD for that fact to start taking personable accountability for their actions! Evan did not do the work and probably did not attend class frequently would be my guess. Why are we cutting this player slack when they did not get it done! This is so bull*&$# that people are trying to put the blame on the coach.
