I want to know what everyone thinks about this. I personally think it would be a good thing. Especially this year where the top 5-6 teams are so close in ability. It might settle several quarrels and spats I see on this board too.
Advantages: It rewards the teams that are peaking late but whose records aren't stellar. I know I have read others agree that it isn't the top 4 teams that go. This would allow for the top 6 teams minimum, with as many as all 8 if all automatic bids are top 8.
Disadvantages: The biggest disadvantage I see is that it adds an extra game to the tourney and might be a scheduling headache. I guess it all depends on how they do it.
If they do all 3 rounds in one weekend it would be demanding physically (of the 2 teams in the finals). We might not see the best match they could play if given more days to rest.
If they spread it out over 2 weekends they could do 4 regional matches and then still have the FF at one location. This would save on travel costs.
Please give your opinion, I would like to hear what you think are advantages/disadvantages to having an 8 team NCAA tourney.

Well, the new edition of Volleyball Magazine (5/'06) just arrived today, and it has some dissapointing info in it:
In an interview with Mark Pavlik on pg 22, VBM asks this question:
"How much of an impact will the proposed expansion of the NCAA tournament to eight teams have on the quality and quantity of men's collegiate volleyball, especially in the East? ()According to an NCAA official, the NCAA has tentatively approved expansion of the men's tournament from four to eight, pending authorization of funding. A decision is expected in 2007 to expand the tournament beginning in 2009."
So, as usual the bureaucrats can't get things done with any kind of urgency. They've been talking about this for a long time, and the last time I read something it was for implementation in '07, not '09.

So, what REALLy doesn't make sense, is why not just expand to 16-teams. Since the requirement of .500 win percentage is likely in place for men's you can't bring everyone in. Although it'd add, what, 1 playing day?
Seed the top 4 teams, let them host (Hawaii may be able to afford paying to bring teams out, even). Group everyone else by proximity, then season's results.
You'd have 2-weekends of play. The first to filter down the teams to the Final Four, the next as it is now.
This would split up the 3-days of vb, and if you only need 4 sites. Of course, with 8 teams, you only need 1 site, so I can see that being easier to manage.

Hey, I heard the proposal to expand the NCAA tournament was actually rejected by the budget committee. For some reason, the amount it would cost to administer the men's outdoor track championships left little moolah over to expand volleyball's championship bracket. Go figure.

the reason why they arent expanding is because there isnt enough teams that have varsity teams.
What happened with the expansion was that the NECVA conference was asked if they wanted an automatic bid since they have 36 teams total in the conference. They said no to expansion. Because they said no they can't use those 36 schools as numbers to increase the tournament. Remember it is a National Collegiate Championship and all divisions are elgible to get in. If the NECVA wanted one of the current 4 bids they really could petition for it, but it wouldnt be in the best interest for the Division 3 athletes in the NECVA. If the NECVA accepted the offer to take the bid (which the offer was turned down by the Executive borad of the NECVA this year) it would really hurt Division 3 on getting their own tournament.
with only 37 d1/d2 schools which is one bid per 9.25 schools. What really needs to happen is the Men's volleyball committee needs to fight for one bid per 6.5 schools, which is what the women have. That would equal to 5.69 schools. So that means they should really just fight for either 5 or 6 total bids. Based on the basis that Women's Volleyball is getting better treatment then men's volleyball. The NCAA won't expand till you get at least 52 varsity total teams. there is a long ways to go before that happens.

yah only 6 more teams for a d3 tourney though of 8 teams. following schools are considering adding d3 teams in the next year or so. Fontbonne Univesrity in St. louis. Mt. Alyosis in PA, Green Mountain College in VT. Regis College in Boston Area if they go co-ed next fall. Also Baptist Bible should be bringing back their team.
