So what happens with Patak now?
If Patak can get his ducks in a row, and be declared eligible, should the team welcome him back? Or should they pull his scholarship and concentrate on developing a team without him?
Can he re-establish his eligibility with NCAA rules on progress toward major?
I would be disappointed not seeing him play anymore.

I hope so too , He may have to take summer school classes instead of the usual National team stint during the summer . I hope he nuts up and makes the effort . He sure isn't being supported by his coach .

He may even be able to correct his g.p.a. with this quarter's grades, since he was fine (g.p.a.-wise) before the winter quarter. Historically, I am sure there have been plenty of athletes in this situation who have managed to pull themselves back up. I am surprised at the willingness of readers to condemn Coach Preston so easily. After all, Patak is probably about 21 years old and a junior. He should know enough by now to go to his coach (and tutors) if he is having difficulty with his coursework. The blame is not all one-sided and I think it's over-the-top to say Preston does not support him. I can't imagine that the team wouldn't want him back.

HEY WEINEE !!! I think everytime I talked about this I said both have egg on their face . It absolutely is the coaches job to keep his players eligible , and yes Patak should have known he was goofing up too, but for the coach to publicly talk about a player like that is shameful !!

I'm not sure many people went out of their way to play under Preston before publicly chastising his best player in a decade... These are amateur players playing for love of a game, not some Kobe-Shaq-Phil Jackson feud ....
Patak probably doesn't have any options with going somewhere else to play in college, so his best bet is to hope UCSB gets rid of Preston...

Everyone should remember that when the media quotes a coach, player, athlete, the words in print often sound the complete opposite of the way they are being said. Preston may be publicing chastising his players ....or maybe not. He is quoted as saying WE do not have a good volleyball IQ....he may be referring to himself, his coaching staff or his players.....we don't know given the limited information the press gives.
What do the players at UCSB say??? that may be very interesting...
Don't slam Preston or Patak.....until you are more informed

WHICH ONE MIKE I'm assuming the one that is worried about us "slamming Patak and Preston before we're informed"... The only recanting Preston will do is if/when UCSB's Public Relations guys get in his ear

UCSB should be contending for the national championship every year. Yet they never do. Something has to change. The players come, the players go. This would be a different team if Reft, Skud, and Wiens were still there. Preston does just enough to stay competitive with the mid-level MPSF teams. Yet I don't know if a coach who more of a disciplinarian would work given the Isla Vista culture. Preston knows VB. Preston goes to all the junior events. He knows the players as well as anyone. A change is needed if they want to improve. It may be that the adminstration is so concerned about raising their academic reputation at this point in time that VB doesn't get their attention. They certainly don't need it to raise their profile. They get so many applications now that the standards for admission are on a par with any other UC school. They should know that when a player of Patak's stature is academically ineligible, it is a black eye for the school as well as the program. As an aside, a few years ago, out of the six incoming freshman, five were inelegible academically after the first quarter!

Imagine if they'd been able to keep Wiens too.

UCSB would be a good team.
But, grades and not passing classes are the same thing as injuries. "If this player wasn't injured, we would have won."
It's all part of College sports.
