It's hard to believe that with so many talented players on the floor last nite, the Bruins did not play well. With veterans like Nelson, Pena, Schrader, Acosta, Morrow, the Bruins should be playing better. Here are some of my observations.
1. Losing Mounts was big. The Bruins did not have a GO TO GUY (aka Costas, Pelzel, Nargi, Rooney etc). I thought Acosta would fill that spot, but he wasn't getting the sets from Nelson. A sidenote: C. Mounts did an outstanding job announcing the Friday nite match. He pronounced all the of the Hawaii players names correctly, was pretty unbias as a Bruin announcer could be. He has a great voice - I wondered how he would sound if he said, "Let's get ready to rumble". Alot better than Stein Metzger's hatchet job two years ago.
2. In the past, the Bruins relied on the Big Serve and the Big Block. They did not have that, on both nites.
Hawaii served very well - several aces. One thing about Hawaii - they are unafraid of the Big Block. Although Hawaii's OHs are the shortest in the conference, they are by far the strongest. Costas and Ching are two guys you wouldn't want to meet behind the gym to settle matters - these guys ARE CUT.
3. You can tell the Warriors are playing well and confident, when the game is tight and goes to the 20's they always manage to separate from the other teams late in the game.
4. McKinney is going to be a Good One. With only a month of playing time you can see his potential. His blocking and his legs will come around in time - sitting on the basketball bench did not help. Had he started the season early, he would have filled Mount's position just fine. The season would have been alot different. Now there is a good chance, the Bruins will not make the playoffs for the first time. Sorry Al.
5. Doug Beal was at the Game. He had to looking at McKinney and Thomas. Imagine McKinney, Thomas and Rooney on the Olympic Team 5 years from now as OHs. I think Delano could be a dominant OH, on the International Level.
I doubt Hawaii will catch Pepp. But a second or third seed would be fine. I'll feel sorry for the 6th and 7th seed in the tournament, they might as well plan on having a good time in the Islands cause you won't have any on the Court. BOOKUMDANOALOHA
