What constitutes "easy?" Got a score? Highlights?

What a match. It was an easy win and no fluke this year for our Ramblers. MIVA Player of the Year Chris Kozlarek posted 23 kills in the 3 game sweep. And boy was I surprised when our great PA announcer gave us the UCLA info. I saw the last half of the IPFW Ball St. match and CJ Macias was not looking too sharp. I just looked up the box score and he hit zero percentage with 17 kills and 17 errors in 5 games. It should be an exciting match on Saturday however.

Eighth-Ranked Loyola Pins No. 15 Ohio State, 3-0, in MIVA Semifinals
Kozlarek's 23 kills help Ramblers advance to Saturday's tournament final vs. IPFW
April 27, 2006
Box Score
CHICAGO - Senior opposite hitter Chris Kozlarek (Evergreen Park, Ill.) recorded a match-high 23 kills for eighth-ranked Loyola as it defeated No. 15 Ohio State, 3-0 (30-24, 30-23, 30-23), tonight in the semifinals of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball (MIVA) Tournament at Alumni Gym. With the win, the top-seeded Ramblers improve to 23-6, while the Buckeyes finish the season with a 21-11 ledger.
Freshman outside hitter Joe Guntli (St. Louis, Mo.) nearly posted a double-double as he tallied nine kills and a career-best nine digs. He also added four service aces and three block assists for the Maroon and Gold. Junior setter Brian Guntli (St. Louis, Mo.) produced 47 assists and seven digs, while senior libero John Thuet (St. Louis, Mo.) tied his career high with 14 digs on the night. Senior outside hitter Chris Nelson (Racine, Wis.) added eight kills and senior middle hitter Corey Kloos (Florissant, Mo.) posted seven kills for the Ramblers.
A Kloos kill started an 8-2 scoring run that broke an early 4-4 tie and gave Loyola a 12-6 lead in the first game. Consecutive kills by senior Mark Greaves opened a 14-7 Ohio State scoring drive that sliced the Maroon and Gold's lead to 20-19. A Joe Guntli kill then opened a 10-5 run to close the game for the Ramblers, which Nelson ended with a kill to put LU ahead by a 1-0 margin.
The Buckeyes rebounded early in game two with a 3-0 lead on a block by senior Andy Cole and freshman John Albertson, but the Maroon and Gold used a quick 6-3 run to tie the score at 6-6 thanks to a kill from Kozlarek. After Loyola went ahead by a 16-10 score, OSU scored the next four points to pull within 16-14 on a kill by junior Layne Dreven. The Ramblers then held off any more Buckeye scoring rallies by finishing the stanza by scoring 14 of the final 23 points to go up two games. In game three, Kozlarek gave the home team a 10-7 advantage with a kill. OSU later tallied six of the next 11 points played to creep within two at 15-13 on a kill by sophomore Daniel Mathews. Ahead only by two at 22-20, an Ohio State service error jumpstarted a 6-3 LU run to end the match and was capped by a Nelson kill and a service ace by Joe Guntli at match point.
Leading the Buckeyes tonight were Greaves (nine kills) and Cole (eight kills, nine digs). Dreven added a match-high five blocks and Mathews posted 25 assists and seven digs for OSU. Loyola finished with a .319 hitting percentage tonight and managed held the Buckeyes to hit .154 on the night. The Ramblers were also ahead in kills (55-34), digs (46-40) and service aces (5-2), but Ohio State outblocked LU by a slim 9.0-8.0 margin.
Loyola advances to face second-seeded IPFW in Saturday's MIVA championship match, which will be shown live on College Sports Television (CSTV) starting at 4 p.m. (Central Time). The Mastodons held off third-seed Ball State, 3-2, in the other semifinal earlier today and were led by sophomore Josh Stewart's match-high 21 kills and .556 hitting percentage.

Good luck IPFW... They are my pick for the MIVA. Loyola maybe too good though.

I think Ohio State forgot Kozlarek is left handed. Oh well, they have a long bus ride to think about that.

Loyola dominated Ohio State. It s the first of two revenges that will be carried out from last years dismal MIVA tourney.

Pretty awesome game. Kozlarek was on. Hopefully they can get it done vs. IPFW. I've been waiting for them to go to the FF for awhile.

I think Ohio State forgot Kozlarek is left handed. Oh well, they have a long bus ride to think about that. The Ohio State block was consistently non-existent, split or late resulting in a tool. The Loyola block was on and when it got by the digging was fantastic. Isn't the setter the one who can influence the blocking performance the most? Did Matthews get "out set"?

I was not at the match, so I am "relying" on the stats posted. Looking at blocking and dig stats, there is not that much of a disparity. Both teams numbered in the 40's in digs. Team blocks and total blocks are close, as are blocking errors (according to the stats above). So, Cyber, was it the timing of the digs and errors that lead you to this statement? Not a challenge to your statement, but if you were there, can you explain your comments versus the stats?

And I do recognize, and agree, that Loyola's hitting percentage is a huge factor (and strong proof of their success), but I will still ask about the numbers.

It seemed OS was always going up late, with a split block or still moving sideways. Maybe Loyola's blocks just seemed more timely or were in bunches giving me the impression they were ahead in that department. Over the next few weeks, I will get some of the sets posted so you can form your own opinion.

I'd say quality of passing and digging was not there for OSU, ball control issues you could say. Mathews was getting 2 or 1 point passes most of the night. OSU's middles connected maybe twice leading to a kill that was driven hard into the floor. Also, thier outsides were unable to get kills on bad or out of system sets. Basically every play snowballed for them and they couldn't stop it. Loyola is playing very well right now so this outcome was expected, especially at home.
The Ball State vs. IPFW was a battle of I can top your hitting and serving error. Macias hitting for .000 you would think end of story Ball State wins easily, but Ball State made constant mistakes and couldn't build more than a 2 point lead when they should have been doubling up IP on the scoreboard. Hope IP doesn't show up again on Saturday...
