UCLA SWEEPS PEPPERDINE IN MPSF SEMIFINAL

IRVINE, Calif. --- UCLA won its 11th consecutive match with a 30-26, 30-28, 30-23 win over Pepperdine in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship Tournament semifinal at the Bren Events Center in Irvine Thursday night. With the victory, the Bruins advance to Saturday night's championship match against the winner of UC Irvine-Long Beach State. The championship match will also be played at the Bren Center.

UCLA (23-12), which was seeded seventh entering the tournament, had moved to No. 5 in the nation this week following a quarterfinal win at Hawaii last Saturday. The Bruins were led Thursday by junior outside hitter Paul George with 16 kills and seven digs. Senior Nick Scheftic added 14 kills and five block assists while Damien Scott and Steve Klosterman added 10 kills apiece. Scott also had three service aces while Dennis Gonzalez recorded 48 assists.

The third-seeded Waves (17-8) were led by junior outside hitter John Parfitt with 21 kills and six digs. Paul Carroll added 12 digs and Jonathan Winder had 41 assists.

UCLA snapped a 24-24 tie in game one on a kill by George and never relinquished the lead.

In game two, Pepperdine built a 16-13 lead before UCLA battled back to take the lead for good at 18-17 on a kill by Klosterman.

The Bruins hit .500 to the Waves' .292 in the third game as UCLA moved ahead for good after taking a 6-5 lead on a kill by George. A Klosterman kill closed out the match.

UCLA's 11-match winning streak began after a 3-0 loss at Pepperdine Mar. 16.
