4/29: LBSU vs. UCLA IRVINE — The UCLA volleyball team was thoroughly outplayed while dropping the first game of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament final match with its Long Beach State counterpart Saturday night in the Bren Center.
But you've got to bag three games to win a volleyball match.
And that's why the Bruins are headed for Penn State and the NCAA Championship semifinals Thursday night while the 49ers are hoping against hope this morning that their season didn't end with the 24-30, 30-28, 30-23 and

30-24 loss.
UCLA will join Penn State (the Eastern Collegiate Volleyball Association representative) and IPFW (which captured the Midwestern College Volleyball Association tournament crown Saturday night) as automatic qualifiers.
Rounding out the field will be an at-large selection chosen by the three-person NCAA Championship Committee this morning.
The 49ers (23-10), whose six-match winning streak was snapped by the Bruins, swept the top-ranked UC Irvine Anteaters Thursday night.
But the Anteaters, based on the 27-3 record (including a 20-2 record in MPSF, four of those wins coming against Long Beach and UCLA) and 21-match winning they took into Thursday night's semifinals, are considered likely to get the bid over the 49ers.
"We'll send some stuff (documentation in support of giving the bid to the 49ers) in because you never know who they are going to take," Long Beach Coach Alan Knipe said, a year after he felt his team should have received the at-large bid, instead of the Bruins.
"But I haven't put a second of thought into it because we've been preparing to try to win this match tonight."
And it appeared as if they were in good shape to do so in Game 1 in front of the announced crowd of 2,800 that seemed to be pretty much split between the teams' supporters.
A kill by Norm Hutton, an exceptional dig by Paul Lotman setting up the play, padded the 49ers' advantage to 17-10 and they added a point after a UCLA timeout.
The Bruins managed to get to within 25-21 but, after a Long Beach timeout, the 49ers scored four of the next five points before the game ended with Steve Klosterman serving long for UCLA.
Long Beach took a 22-20 advantage in a back-and-forth Game 2 before the Bruins tied it at 23 and then 24.
A service error by Klosterman gave the lead back to Long Beach before the Bruins scored three consecutive points, on a block by Paul George and then two service aces.
The 49ers got to within a point three more times before Klosterman ended things on a left-side kill off a set from Dennis Gonzalez.
The Bruins dominated Game 3 from jump street, taking a 4-1 lead, which led to a Long Beach timeout.
They built the advantage to 20-15 before Long Beach reeled off three consecutive points before Coach Al Scates called time out.
And the Bruins scored the next two points after play resumed. Long Beach managed to get to within 26-23 before UCLA scored the final four points.
A Hutton kill tied Game 4 at 20 before the Bruins scored the next four points to regain control of the situation.
George, Klosterman and Nick Scheftic combined for 45 of the 61 kills for the Bruins (24-12), who will take a 12-match winning streak to State College in search of their 19 NCAA title in 26 trips to the national championships.
Hutton had 27 kills for Long Beach while setter Tyler Hildebrand had 48 assists in what was likely final match as a 49er.
