Al Scates and UCLA bashers need not comment! ;D
Is this Al Scates best coaching effort... or at least one of his best? I mean for UCLA to be 12-10 and in danger of not even making the MPSF tournament to winning the tournament has to say something.

UCLA's run to the Final Four was as impressive as BYU collapse was unimpressive...

UCLA's run to the Final Four was as impressive as BYU collapse was unimpressive... No way, UCLA's run is way more impressive than anything. Scates coaching has been great and has been finding the best matchups. Without a doubt the best story of the post season.

Scates did a good job coaching, but part of it was that his team is finally healthy. Klosterman finally started getting comfortable near the end of the season. Ker got out of his funk he was in during the beginning of the year. Gonzalez has recovered from his injury at Hawaii. Up until the very end of the season, UCLA couldn't put the line up that they forecast. Now with everyone relatively healthy, they are showing why they were picked as a top team for the season.

Scates does a great job in coaching and he knows when it's crunch time. Great job, and I hope UCI beats them.

Midwestfan.... Thank you for this post. Not that long ago, some on here were calling for Scates' retirement, even dare I say his head. It was stated by someone that when it matters he (Scates) ALWAYS has his team ready for the grandest stage in men's volleyball here in our country. But the ney sayers were all over the place. Not once was it metioned that UCLA would win it, no, in fact the idea was that they would be ready to play in the playoffs. Some even questioned them getting there. As usual the greatest coach in collegiate history, finds a way to not just get his team there and ready, but win it out right, again. Wow. What more can be said? I agree with most UCLA had many injuries during the season, but in that Coach Scates continued to get his TEAM ready. He turned role players into starters, and starters into champions. When his big guns of Klosterman and Ker started playing better along with Gonzalez's setting an dthe teams overall defensive play improved it made his life easier. But what about what he did before they came back. That's the mark of a championship coach knowing what needs to be done, weathering a storm and getting his guys to take care of business when it counts. KUDOS to coach Scates. But it sucks that Speraw lost in the end to his mentor, and former coach. HMMM..seems like the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. I think we'll see UCI and UCLA in the finals of the big dance. Should be good. Can't wait to that on ESPN.

Pupil vs. Teacher...Speraw vs. Scates...UCI vs. UCLA...should make for some interesting commentary on Saturday...wonder who they'll get to call the match on ESPN2? I hope it's someone who can bring some interesting insight to the match, like Mike Dodd, and not some idiot like Anne Marie Anderson who talks about "The Serving Rules" every time she calls a match!!

AGAIN, AGREED...she babbles too much. I was hoping for a MARLOWE/FERGUSON tandum...the flash and color of Marlowe with the class and knowledge of Bill. It would harkens the days of Marlowe/Sunderland...hmmmm, memories of great volleyball championships of the past. And an Olympic Gold Medal!
