I guess this is only a forum for College VB as the recent weekend gave us some great HS VB that has so far gone w/o comment. Does anyone remember sideout scoring and the great comebacks that go with it? Forty minute games. Three hour plus matches? Mira Costa beat Marina in 5. Marina is not even expected to be one of the top OC teams. They do have Klosterman, who registered 56 kills. but Costa has some great skill players. Are we seeing the end of the Costa era of dominance? San Clemente won the 32 team Francis Parker San Diego tournment over Esperanza in the finals. SC got up big on Esp. but hung on to win in each game 15-13 and 16-14. Jablonski was the dominant hitter with 33 kills in that match but SC has the more balanced attack with Curtiss Yoder(son of Bob), Brett Simpson, and JD Walker. Look for these two teams to meet again in the finals of the OC Championships this weekend. This is the last year of sideout scoring in HS. You may never ever see it again. Take in a match to remember the loss of a fun system.

Ask any college coach and he'll tell you that the overall talent in the hs senior class is a bit down this year. Last year in contrast was just a very good year, so the HS scene lost a lot of quality talent to graduation. But there are still a number of very very good hs seniors this year. You mentioned one at Marina.
Marina by the way plays last year's mythical National Champions, La Costa Canyon of San Diego next Tuesday the 25th, at Marina. Game time aprox. 5-5:30PM. Marina was the only team to beat La Costa Canyon last year, and LCC will be out for revenge. This will be IMO, the big game of the week, and a must see for anyone who likes good HS boy's volleyball.
Mira Cost was playing their first match of the season with a somewhat veteran crew. Marina was playing their 3rd match. MC was a little rusty, but I'm sure they'll gel well and play much better as they go. They had a lot of guys who could score. Three of their starters play for LBC Club and are quality players. One, Josh Schwarzapel is a talented player who is on his way to play at Stanford next year. They also have Tim Schneider (who has an uncanny ability to dig with all parts of his anatomy ;D ) and an excellent setter in Jordan Morris. (Jordan had a terrific match by the way. He'll only get better too.) The guy that surprised me the most for his excellent play in that match was Taylor Hein. I think he had a coming out party with something like 28 kills. He was the edge for MC, IMO.
As far as Marina goes, they've been sitting under the radar since they lost a lot of their starting lineup from last year's team, but with the fine way they played Mira Costa, the new Marina coaches have done a very good job of getting that young and innexperienced group playing well right out the box. I don't think there was a person in the gym that wasn't highly surprised at how well they played against MC.
The season is young, so we're sure to see improvement from both teams, but it does go fast in BVB.
I'm anxious to see Loyola play. MC and Loyola also play this week, Friday I believe. Anyone know the exact time, day and location.

I had to laugh when I saw the reference to Schneider using all parts of his anatomy against Marina...did you see him receive serve from Klosterman with the side of his head??? And I believe the ball was kept in play... (no joke)

Yes, that was the most bizzare play I've ever seen. It was a rocket serve that Tim couldn't get out of the way of, couldn't even get a finger on it. It hit the side of his face perfectly to cause it to go back sailing over the net. The gym went nuts, to say the least. And MC did win the point. Players were so busy reacting (laughing) from it they could hardly play. And Tim did a great job of pumping up to say, "hey, I planned it that way." The match was just a great night of entertainment all around.

Marina should have no problem w/ La Costa based on their performance last weekend. LC graduated everyone. This could be the crummy game of the week. Better matchups can be seen in pool play at the OC tourney friday and Sat w/ the finals next monday. Best match though is Costa v. Loyola friday.

Loyola beats Mira Costa in 4. Costa wants a rematch. Be careful of what you wish for. Meanwhile in OC tonight the finals of the OC championships are going down at Edison HS @ 7pm. San Clemente and Huntington Beach, the last two undefeated teams in OC match up. SC won the San Diego Championships last week. They struggled w/ Woodbridge in the semi's, pulling out the 1st game 19-17 in comeback fashion, facing game point at 14-13, 15-14, 16-15 and 17-16. Second game was 15-8, SC. HB romped over Mission Viejo in the semis 3 and 2. Mission had the big win over Esperanza in pool play, in come from behind fashion, losing the first game and trailing in the second 8-2 before taking over. Esp. was thus eliminated, having lost to Newport earlier. HB and SC appear to be well matched, both having scrappy, well balanced teams. HB looks a little bigger, but SC has great ball control. Come on Down.

Loyola wins the Dos Pueblos tournment, beating San Clemente in the finals 17-15. Loyola has 5 youth national team members while SC doesn't even have anyone being recruited by a D-1 school. SC had already won the San Diego and Orange County tourneys. How does this happen? Is the YNT selection process flawed and/or are the colleges missing the boat? On paper SC l should not be able to compete w/ Loyola, nor should any other school for that matter. Second question. Do any of the regular posters even care about HS Volleyball. All I ever see is the same old boring chit chat about the same 2 or 3 colleges. You posters should come out of your little isolated world once in a while.

You should have been at the Dos Pueblos Tournament. Great high school volleyball. Those top teams had some real talent on the courts. But the best had to be that Loyola - San Clemente game! Yes, Loyola played with 4 YNT players, seniors Beckwith, Smith, and Schkud, and a young sophmore, CJ Schellenberg. Loyola crushed the teams in their pool aw well as semi finals. Their point overall point average was over twice that of the second place team, San Clemente. But that didn't phase San Clemente one bit. San Clemente was an awesome team to watch al day. At one point during the final match Loyola was up 4-0. Simpson came up to serve and before you knew it, SC tied the game and just kept going. Things went well for SC as Loyola just went a little flat. Eventually the score was like 12-6 and looked like Sc had the game. Loyola woke up, served well, had some big blocks, got the passes up to Beckwith, and he found his go-to-man, Schkud. Tied the game up 12-12 and it was a dog fight with zillions of side outs. Loyola came out on top this time. It was great volleyball, great sportmanship form both teams, and a great day to watch volleyball in Santa Barbara!

No argument here. Unfortunately the finals were only one game but since the finals didn't start until after 9pm no one complained. The finals did show that Loyola, despite all their stars, is beatable. Right now they are head and shoulders above everyone--literally. I would like to see a rematch of these teams in CIF, but both teams will have a tough time getting there as all of todays LA Times top 10 teams are in D-1 and there are some good teams that didn't make that list.
