Can you believe that two players from Loyola of Chicago made it on the 1st team all american? Wow... Nobody from UCLA but 2 from Loyola of Chicago! Not that I completely disagree but the committee does need to spread about the awards. 20 AAs and 15 of them came from the MPSF. I don't see a lot of logic in arguing that UCLA didn't get anyone but Loyola did. If you take away an award from Loyola, it would more likely go to a player from one of the other MPSF teams, not UCLA. Aside from the fact that UCLA got hot at the right time, there really isn't a player that deserves it. Klosterman was injuried during the beginning on the season and it took him til 2/3 of the season was over before he got into a grove. Gonzalez was injuried for part of the year. Ker got yanked at the beginning of the season. I can't really see anyone from UCLA getting an AA award.

Even Al Scates would have to agree that no Bruin had an AA-calibre YEAR. But in the last few weeks, UCLA has played with more heart and better teamwork than all the teams with multiple AA's.
Gotta give credit to Big Al for lighting a fire in the guys, Gonzalez for setting a smoother offense, and to the team as a whole for finally playing UCLA volleyball.
Although there's no real superstar on the team, I've been impressed by how players like George, Klosterman, Sheftic have been clutch during the playoffs.
If UCI and UCLA play on Saturday, it will be a great match between two TEAMS. Neither team can rely on a superstar type player like Rooney, Katz, or Ivie. This makes the set selection much more difficult, and crucial. Even though Thornton got the AA nod, I think Gonzalez has more savvy.

Really surprised that Reft didn't get first team AA. I kind of thought Asuka would get first team, but I was hoping the committee would recognize that both Reft and Asuka were so important to their team that both would be first team AAs. From what I have read, I believe that one and only one spot is available for liberos on each team.

I don't like Grunst or Koz on the 1st team. I agree that UCLA should've got some love...I would put Scheftic and Klosterman on the 2nd team. I agree w/ the Troll above...UCLA is going to be amped up for the semis, yikes. I don't think anybody in the nation can match up w/ Scheftic's attack in the middle...look out below! Amen. 2 1st teamers on Loyola? They didn't even win their own tourney at home. I saw them both on CSTV and wasn't impressed at all.

From what I have read, I believe that one and only one spot is available for liberos on each team. The rule is unclear about that. It says that one spot in each team is designated for the libero. It doesn't say that there is only one spot for a libero on each team. I believe the rule was made so that the libero position would be recognized in each team and not overlooked. However, I can see how people would only designate one spot. I believe that both Asuka and Reft deserved first team AA awards. You dont limit the amount of any other position on the AA teams so it doesn't make sense to limit the libero position.

The All-Americans are not chosen based on how good they are. In other words, the best players do not necessarily get All-American honors. If a great player has a bad year he will not make All-American. Also, how well a team does has nothing to do with being voted All-American. It is not a team award, it is an individual award. Although many coaches will try to spin it as a team award, it is simply not. Sure, if a team has 4 players voted All-American it is likely that their team will have done very well that year, but a team does not need to do well in order for a player to have an exceptional year. This is what All-Americans are about.

In many of the past Championship years, UCLA would have an AA or two. I like it that everyone has been counting them out, and they have no AA's.
It's a team game. So as a team, go out there and bring to UCLA (and to Westwood) number 19!

Volleyball is a team game to be sure (pretty obvious), but this thread is about All-Americans (individuals), not teams. Congrats to all the individual standouts this season!

All about the individuals, not about what really matters: The Team and... Winning. Congratulations to all of the All-Americans this year. And, to the NCAA Champion UCLA Bruins!
