seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2013261661_cwustudents27m.htmlA bunch of Central WA kids went to a party where they got so drunk that many of them ended up in the hospital. IMO, there's nothing to see here, move along folks. But the state AG (and likely candidate for governor in two years) decided he's going to ban caffeinated alcoholic drinks, including the one that got blamed for this party, something called Four Loko. (He doesn't seem to be trying to ban Irish coffee, or even mixing Red Bull shooters.) Anyway, the makers of Four Loko are defending themselves by saying that the kids "misused" their product. That seems more than a little disingenuous. What exactly is the intended use of their product other than to mess yourself up?

Make that Central Washington, but they are all the same to us once you cross the Cascades. And it's Four Loko with a "k".

So, has anyone tried this type of drink? A friend of mine who was VP of sales at a leading brewery once told me quite a few years ago that they were losing shares because kids weren't drinking beers because they were drinking this kind of stuff. I have never tried it. Just found this. www.nytimes.com/2010/10/27/us/27drink.html?_r=1&hp

Not the church, Not the state, Citizens should caffeinate!
Go to many other western civilized countries and you can purchases cases of alcohol/cola pre-mixed in cans, right next to the cases of Coke and Pepsi. Why some people in America want to go all Taliban on anything related to alcohol, I'll never understand.

What exactly is the intended use of their product other than to mess yourself up? That seems obvious, just like it seems obvious that you go to the bar to get drunk - when in reality, it's against the law for a bartender to serve someone who is already intoxicated. Just like the "intended purpose" for alcohol is to "enjoy it" or whatever... not to "get drunk". Americans have to hide truths. We are terrible at admitting anything. It can't be known that alcohol's sole purpose is to get you drunk! We have to pretend that it's for something else, and that getting drunk is a side effect.

mmm.. and that vs the sole purpose of playing Volleyball or any other sport?
To Beat someone ?/// even if its yourself ?
What about hunting or fishing.?
Kill and eat something ?
why do we need to dwell or apologize for being human ?

The main problem is that today’s society leaves zero tolerance for accountability. We cannot possibly be responsible for our own actions - it must be someone else’s fault. Shoot and kill your parents? Ban guns. Drink a gallon of everclear and pass out drunk and alone at a frat house? Ban alcohol from frats. Give yourself 1st degree burns by pouring steaming hot coffee on your sweatpants? Sue McDonalds.
The message here? Do whatever the hell you want regardless of the consequences/results because if you don't like the consequences/results - our legal/moral system will appropriate the blame to someone other than you. Point fingers, file lawsuits - continue to propagate the downfall of humanity.
It’s not your fault you're an idiot - someone raised you that way.

Although not quite as aggressively, but I agree with the overall concept of what you're saying. The can says 12 percent. It's 24 ounces. That's a heavy amount of alcohol in a small can, and kids are deciding to drink it irresponsibly. How is that the fault of the company? I won't go into details, but I have a condition where I get fatigued when I drink. I don't drink to get drunk, but I enjoy a nice buzz. I have drank alcoholic energy drinks such as Sparks (before they forced them to take out the energy ingredients), Tilt, Max, and Four Loko because I enjoy not wanting to fall asleep everytime I drink. I don't chug it, and at most I'll have 2 in a day. I have never gotten near the point of the people that I keep reading about "falling victim" to four loko. Like anything else, it's about regulation. Educate people about percentages: Light beers can be as low as 2.5-5 percent alcohol, which makes Four Loko equivalent to 4-6 beers. Therefore, don't drink it as fast as a beer. Pretty simple concept. It's going to be a sad day when I can't enjoy my favorite drink because other people can't drink it responsibly.
