When I hear these statements that Costas hasn't done enough this year such as, I am compelled to set the record straight. UH Whoa buddy...When I say hasn't done it all year, I guess I had some particular matches in mind and they aren't stellar and they are against the better teams. Costas vs. Pepp .215 25 11 65 65 attempts! Costas vs. BYU .255 24 10 55 Costas vs. CSUN .245 20 8 45 Costas vs. UCI -.100 7 9 20 -100 on the night! He has had a lot of great matches with incredible hitting percentages and is most worthy of any award he gets. I wasn't saying that he didn't deserve POY. Like I said...He's a great all-around player. I was merely bringing up some points about these and other players. I wish I had the time to write a long disertation on the pros and cons of the state of Hawaii.... Thanks for setting the record straight and "POY by Far"...I don't think he has run away with it pal. I'm sorry, your statement may be quite accurate. I do see "1" un-Costas like match stat in your list, that may qualify Costas hasn't done it all year in your eyes. You must have had very tough time finding bad days for Costas to list these match stat, for you have listed one that the AVCA considers Player of the Week caliber stat in the match vs. Pepp since he got the POW that week. Yes, Costas may have had "ONE" not so stellar day against then very hot UCI (all credit goes to UCI team), but he still shines much brighter than all other great stars.

Whena player only plays front row, you may think it is playing half the time (considering they play 3, maybe 4 rotations), but that really isn't the whole story. What you really have to look at is how many points they score, and how much they acdtually participate. Being in there doesn't mean you will get set or dig. There are a lot of players who, while still in, never see the ball. Yes, they are less of a liability, but it doesn't necessarily mean they are great defensive players. Maybe they are just better at staying away from the ball.
With Keenan you could also argue his numbers are more solid, considering he doesn't see sets in the back row, just when he subs in and players know he will be getting the ball. That being said, I think Costas has done a fantastic job carrying his team and does deserve POY honors.

Also middle blockers get less attempts at sets because of serve receive and passing errors during the game also , it is really hard to set the quick hit from a running toward the back line position. Pepperdine has been getting good rtesults from their middles whether it is Brad Keenan, Andy Webb or Andy Hein. Possibly due to good serve receiving and setting .

Further arguments that OH and S are more valuable. By the time the ball gets to the middle a lot of the work is already done. I'm not discounting the work and effort that goes into playing MB but their ability to contribute is limited to what work other people do. Really a middle can be taken out of a game by simply bad passing. Give me a good OH over a good MB any day because no pass, no play.

Not only that but they usually go up against one blocker, and rarely see a double block, and almost never see a triple block. In that respect, they have a better chance at putting the ball down.

Good point Digger , but give me a good blocking middle and you will see games turned around just as you will with a big Costas or Ching hit. 8 - 10 blocks a game by one middle is usually enough to be more than the whole other team . At Pepperdine all of the middles have been blocking well and usually doubling the other teams blocks for both rotations no matter who has been playing. Keenan has led the NCAA in blocks this year and fought hard with Miladinovich last year. Also at Pepperdine Webb was blocking well until he got hurt and Hein has taken over admirably during Webb's absense. It is fun speculating abd discussing this and other aspects of the game.
