Calls: More calls went to UCI then to PSU. examples: I saw two footfaults and the obvious non-ace that was out by a foot easily.
Lights: the lights in Rec Hall are programed to go out at 11 every night. Certainly and oversight in the 3 hourmatch 14-13 at 10:59:59.
Irvine: The rightside is outstanding. Spittle really had a tough time last night and just couldn't get it together. Certainly a better player than he showed. Stefan Rangle came in a really did a nice job. Nice fluent swing and movement. The shank to end the match will stay with him for a while but in reality he might be more responsible for getting Irvine back in the match.
Ironic: Al Scates told me in the elevator that when they were playing at Irvine this year the same thing happen with the lights going out.....only UCLA came back to beat them after being down.
Revenge is sweet: Congrats to Odell for engineering a dismantling of the #1 team against the coach (Speraw) who cut him from JNT in favor of two smaller setters, one of which was the Irvine setter and the other Dennis Gonzales......hmmm one more match win would be poetic. Just some spice.
Nice to have the PSU Libero (3rd stringer at beginning of season) who is from Irvine California shine so well in the National Championships.
Congrats to the Seniors who played their hearts out an delivered a crushing blow to the best that the MPSF had to offer this year.
As previously mentioned the lack of FF4 experience for the players and staff of Irvine (Speraw was very animated) with the addition of some pretty enthusiastic PSU alumni provided for an atmosphere that was difficult for the visitors to get on track.
The PSU squad would bend but not break and their serve receive, blocking and quick transition game was relentless.
Low and behold Meerstein can block......an boy did he.
Proper continued to have a stellar season and lived up to his billing.
Wentzel to me was one of the most important keys to the victory. He was extremely smart and savvy in his game.
Gutor looked like he might implode again but held it together. No doubt sitting him down for a bit was good in game 4.
Anderson got his PT and provided a game sealing block.
Side note!
Certainly wished that the middle for PSU was forced a bit more than it was and that the PSU coaches utilize their bench abit more for serving subs for Meerstein.
NOW..... wasn't it much better to have PSU in the FF at home rather than Mason. That amosphere was electric and the REC HALL will be out of control come Saturday evening.
Congrats PSU on a huge victory.
