Without Xu as the backup setter, perhaps Belardi won't be used as a serving sub in case she needs to come in for Miner. the only way I see belardi coming in for miner would be in the case of injury, the gap is too far to pull miner if she having an 'off' game imo Yup, that's what I was referring to. I think Miner has had to come out a few times in the past two seasons for concussion protocols. I think there was a game in 2021 when Miner had to step out for concussion, Selina Xu came in but was injured(?) and eventually had to also come out, Kalissa Greene had left the team at that point, and Stanford had to use Tufuga to finish out a match. It was not ideal to say the least. Yu's commitment will certainly bolster the depth in 2024. Belardi is no slouch at setter but would be a blocking liability in the front row if she had to step in for Miner.

Or are we looking at a 2025 setter?

She won't penetrate as a blocker at the same level and likely her back row D won't be as good. Unless someone jaw dropping good "wants Stanford" she's going to be running the show.

Yeah, Miner is a pretty good blocker and exceptional at going to the floor to cover random tips. I don't think Yu is there yet.
Jenna Gray is among a group of setters in the USA program for the summer VNL matches. I don't know who is better at the college level, Miner or Gray. I suspect Hambly will be looking for another setter for 2025 or 2026 at the latest.

I think senior year gray was better than sophomore year miner, but i do think miner will surpass gray in terms of level of play by the end of her career

Miner is exceptional at setting when the pass is really off whereas Gray had Plummer bail her out for some bad bump sets

I’ve heard Glass in 2025 is a big target for Stanford. Yu is a higher rated player. She made the U19 tryout team (although not the final team) and Glass didn't. Looking at both of their tape, Yu is a better setter but Glass is more athletic. FWIW, Stanford is Glass's dream school. If offered she is 100%.

Glass looks to be an inch taller than Yu and she is really aggressive and physical at the net. She really likes to go cross court on 2 with her powerful left arm or alternately tip behind her back. If both matriculate at Stanford, it will be an interesting battle, or does Hambly go against the grain and his better judgement and try a 6-2 or 5-2?

Did Glasses birthday fall within the birth dates for the U19 team?

They aren’t in the same class, so I’m not sure how/where you’d see them ranked other than personal opinion (which is fine). If you are talking about the Pan Am U19 training team, I don’t think that’s the best barometer - it will be the U19 worlds team. And even then, so what? Was Hudson or Colyer on the youth national teams before college? No. Also, subjectively being better at setting the ball doesn’t always mean that player will win the starting setter job. I think many would agree that Xu was objectively better at setting the ball than Miner in prep play - and we all know how that turned out. I know not who will be Stanford’s next franchise setter, but I do know that it is very rare for an elite program like Stanford to recruit a top 3 setter and a big time target for ALL the schools in 2025, if they felt like they already had their next star setter in 2024.

Well. It is true they are in different classes. Charlotte's team mate at Tribe Kelly Kinney was invited to that tryout. Charlotte played in the NTDP camp at right around the same time. I think that indicates that at least now, the national team likes Yu better. But it could be argued. Even getting invited to that tryout suggests Yu is one of the top setters in her class. Obviously Izzy Stark (PSU) is the highest rated. I have watched Charlotte play a lot. She is very athletic. One of the best attacking setters I have seen. Is probably an inch or so taller than Yu. Agree that the Xu vs Miner comparison is a decent one. Not sure Charlotte is anywhere near as good a technical setter as Miner. FWIW, Miner played for a bunch of national teams. Xu played for one. Neither of these girls has made one yet although they are young. BTW, the fact that Stanford recruited Xu and then Miner suggests they are happy to recruit back to back highly rated setters. My guess is neither Yu nor Glass are really franchise setters FWIW.
