i think Cynthia's freshman year was a All American Free Year Only for Cynthia, not for Stanford. Richards was 1st team, Akinradewo was 2nd team and Kehoe was 3rd team. When was the last time they DID NOT return one or multiple AAs? 2005. The program with a Stanford 2005-like recruiting class in 2011 wears cardinal and... gold. Sigh. Since Kim Oden won Stanford's first AVCA A-A award in 1983, the three seasons they did not return at least one A-A were 1988, 1993 and 2005... 2011 will be the fourth... and the only season they didn't have at least one first-team A-A was 1993. Pretty good run... Kim Oden 1983 (1st), 1984 (1st), 1985 (1st) Bobbie Broer 1984 (2nd) Wendi Rush 1985 (1st), 1986 (2nd), 1987 (1st) Teresa Smith . 1986 (1st), 1987 (2nd) Nancy Reno 1987 (1st) Kristin Klein . 1988 (1st), 1989 (2nd), 1990 (1st), 1991 (1st) Bev Oden 1989 (1st), 1990 (1st), 1991 (1st), 1992 (1st) Carrie Feldman 1992 (2nd) Cary Wendell 1993 (2nd), 1994 (1st), 1995 (1st) Kristin Folkl 1994 (1st), 1995 (2nd), 1996 (2nd), 1997 (1st) Marnie Triefenbach 1994 (2nd) Lisa Sharpley 1995 (1st), 1996 (1st), 1997 (2nd) Eileen Murfee 1996 (2nd) Kerri Walsh 1996 (1st), 1997 (1st), 1998 (1st), 1999 (1st) Logan Tom 1999 (1st), 2000 (1st), 2001 (1st), 2002 (1st) Ogonna Nnamani 2001 (2nd), 2002 (2nd), 2003 (1st), 2004 (1st) Sara McGee 2002 (1st) Jennifer Harvey . 2003 (2nd) Foluke Akinradewo 2005 (2nd), 2006 (1st), 2007 (1st), 2008 (1st) Bryn Kehoe . 2005 (3rd), 2006 (2nd), 2007 (1st) Kristin Richards . 2005 (1st), 2006 (3rd) Cynthia Barboza . 2006 (1st), 2007 (1st), 2008 (1st) Alix Klineman 2007 (2nd), 2008 (1st), 2009 (2nd), 2010 (1st) Gabi Ailes . 2009 (HM), 2010 (3rd) Cassidy Lichtman . 2009 (1st), 2010 (1st) Janet Okogbaa . 2009 (2nd)

While I don't think next years Stanford team will be wrapped up in individual awards like some of the previous teams, I think these four young ladies have a chance for breakout years and surprise some of you critics. 1) Rachel Williams. Explosive athlete that will benefit greatly from the off season conditioning program that Stanford has implemented the last few years. She had to play in the shadows of this years AA's this season. 2) Karissa Cook. We have not seen what this athlete can do yet due to injuries and having to be a part time setter in a 6-2. One of the best beach players in Cali. Played as a hitter/setter in a 6-2 in high school and club season. Upside is tremendous when she finally gets the ball in her hands for the full rotation. 3) Hayley Spelman. If this 6'6" lefty improves as much as she did in the last off season and figures out how to block, she will be a lock for AA honors. Will be a more focal point of the offense next year. 4) Carly Wopat. Phenomenal athlete. If Cook and Carly can get their timing down on about three different sets (which is difficult because Carly flies through the air and often drifts), she may become unstoppable. Also, her jump serve is lethal already and if she gains even more confidence and heat with it, Carly will be able to create long scoring runs like she did at UW this year when she served the final four points to lead a great comeback victory in front of the loudest crowd she has ever heard. Plus, she just turned 18. she is still a baby. I haven't given up hope just because 3 AA's are graduating. This just opens the door for these youngsters to step up and flourish.

i agree Coast: plus if spelman becomes a 6 rotation RS (she can hit from the backrow) just another weapon and option. and Williams is going to be just fine and also a 6 rotation player, and she'll get set out of the back row, just more options... i am looking forward to next season for the cardinal...

I think 2011 may be a slightly down year, but 2012 should be better. I have a question about Jordan Burgess as a recruit. Wouldn’t Howard be a better fit for Stanford’s long-term future than someone who is already much closer to maximizing her potential in high school? I don’t think any 2012 OH recruit is going to get a starting role their freshman year so it wouldn’t matter if they are not that polished coming out of high school.
There are so many 6’0” and under players who absolutely dominate at the high school/club level only to go on to a mediocre college career (few notable exceptions, of course). But for every sub 6’ OH who has an outstanding DI career, there are dozens who fade into the background. In high school these girls are going against 5’10” blockers with average verticals. DI is different.

Was Cook injured this season also? I thought she was healthy. Is she faster when she's not injured cuz she was definitely always half a step too slow to the ball. Stanford needs a fiery setter to lead them next year. Maybe Bai can train as a setter and set a 5-1.

She was not at 100%, she sat out a lot of the conference schedule due to injury.

Let's also step back and think out-of-the-box. When you do that you come to at least one conclusion. And, that is, the projected key recruits and current starters form a nucleus that is sub-standard in size. That is an important consideration when you have to deal with the sheer size of some of the top level teams in the Pac-10. In fact, you might compare the projection to the current UW team, which is relatively small by Pac-10 standards, but very athletic.

It sounds like a "duh" statement, but players who keep getting injured will tend to keep on getting injured. I wouldn't bet The Farm on Karissa Cook ever being healthy for an entire season.

I wouldn't be surprised if both Carly and Rachel surprise us all and have a break out season next year, knowing they have to fill the big void left by Klineman and co. They could both do a 'Tarah' during the off season, and lay down the boom in the Pac 10 come fall.

Wow, you are not very optimistic. Other than saying the program that signed the Stanford 2005-like 2011 recruiting class was USC... a widely held opinion on this board... how was I pessimistic? Unless Stanford accepts a transfer from a current A-A outside the conference with a release (allowing her to play in 2011)... given the program's history, that's almost inconceivable... next season will be the fourth season in the current run that the program had no returning A-A. Each time that has happened before... 1998, 1993, 2005... and this time... 2011... it is because all of Stanford's A-A's were seniors who have used up their four years of athletic eligibility. I made no claim about whether or not the program will have new A-A's in 2011. Their first-team A-A in 2005, Kristin Richards, was a junior who had a breakout season. The same thing happened again in 2009 with Cassidy Lichtman. It could easily happen again in 2011.

And what are you basing that on? The first player that comes to my mind is Alix Klineman. She had major shoulder surgery and had some bad knees at the end of her 2008 soph year. She is likely to be NPOY and injury free as she finishes her career.

I suspect Cook will be the setter for the next two years, but will have periods of the season where she will not be near her best, perhaps having to sit out matches. Without another setter on the roster, I suspect Bai will get reps as a setter if only for insurance purposes.

Murrey took two years to hit her groove and came in to Cal as a more complete player than Williams at Stanford. I'm not so sure Williams will be able to handle the increased passing/defensive responsibilities AND carry the type of offense load that an OH1 at Stanford usually requires. I do think Carly will have a breakout season next year. I think she is a more complete player at her position, but with questions at serve receive and passing in general, I wonder how much her offense will have opportunities to shine.
