Of course Yelin has beaten more higher ranked schools than Mike. There's a LOT more schools higher ranked than UL than there is MN. More opportunities. And for upsets there were at least 2 this past season with IL and PSU. Yelin's a decent coach. Mike's a Hall of Fame coach. Stop being a troll.

Bill, I don't have to talk to JT. You don't know what you are talking about. Minnesota had nothing before Mike? Seriously?
Hmmm. 6,000 fans for the match against Notre Dame in 1993 (I was there, btw). Many crowds over 2,000. I'd bet they averaged close to 1500-2000.
They were ranked #9 in the country in 1989 (and had a 5000+ crowd for the OSU match).
They hosted the Final Four in 1986 (or was it 1987?).
Ever hear of Chris Schaefer? Andrea Gonzalez? Sue Jackson? Becky Bauer? Katrien DeDecker? Pam Miller? Sharon Oesterling?
Mike certainly took the program to a new level, but it is absolutely false that it only averaged 400 fans and was a Big10 bottomfeeder prior to his arrival. Why do you think there was such a stink about Schleuder being let go?

Troll on this.. Volleyball Team Established: 1975 All Time Record: 662-360 (.647) Playing Facility: Cardinal Arena (1990) Record at Cardinal Arena: 153-19 Head Coach: Leonid Yelin Conference Titles: 16 NCAA Tournament Appearances: 16 Last NCAA Appearance: 2008 All-Americans: 2 Volleyball has traditionally been one of UofL's most successful programs, led by head coach Leonid Yelin, whose .772 career winning percentage ranks 9th among active coaches. During the 2005 season, UofL was ranked as high as #6 en route to a 30-3 record, a regular season tie for the Big East title, and a second straight trip to the Sweet 16. The team also had an average attendance of 1,215 per game in their 840 seat Cardinal Arena, with fans turned away at several games. Currently UofL is seeking state funding to expand the arena to better meet fan demands and prevent unsafe "standing room only" crowds. UofL also hosted both the 2005 Big East Volleyball tournament and the first two rounds of NCAA volleyball tournament at the Kentucky International Expo Center in Downtown Louisville, and will host the Women's Final Four in 2012 at the KFC Yum! Center. In 2005, two Cardinals, seniors Lena Ustymenko and Jennifer Hoffman, were named second team All-American. Previously only one Big East volleyball player had been named an All-American.[2] Ustymenko was also named the 2005 Big East player of the year and Hoffman led the nation in hitting percentage in the Card's 6-2 offense.[2] The program has won 14 of its last 15 conference titles (with another in 1983) and has been to the NCAA tourney 16 times since 1982, with 44 players making their all-conference team. The team has a 153-19 all time record at Cardinal Arena. End From en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louisville_CardinalsOK.. This thread is about the NEXT Minnesota Coach. Not about me or your opinion of me. Now The guy coached in a different conference and has as much success as Mike did in the Big 10 .. perhaps even more. Name another coach mentioned with that record..or winning % Mike is a Hall of fame coach..indeed. Give Yelin the coaching job here and he will be too. He is the BEST NAME out there. Not because I say so..because it is true. Minny could take the cheap route and hire an assistant and we will get KILLED. We may still get killed with Leo..but it wouldn't seem as if that were as big a risk going forward as any other hire would be. Again The original poster mentioned only 1 recruit going forward. RECRUIT and win..simple.

r ..and How many PAID FANS showed up for IOWA on wed during Mikes first 2 years?
I never said AVERAGED.
Giving students free tickets..we didn't have a band or cheerleaders..we had SQUAT...compared to say Nebraska?
again.. Mikes first 4 years were Tough ..then it got much better.
But WHOEVER gets the NEXT COACHING JOB will not have it as MIKE had it. ( pressure )
FACT.( all Mike had to do is win 1 round..)
They will have large shoes and expectations to fill.
I am not willing to let the school think it can hire some high school coach or assistant and justify it for monetary reasons..
are you? 10 years as season ticket holder and several as booster member maybe entitles me that right.
At least to an opinion if nothing more..

Just for the record, since Bill seems determined to spread misinformation:
It was Mike who got rid of the cheerleaders.
Students were never a factor in attendance, however they got their tickets (seems to me they are still not charged admission).
What is Louisville's attendance figures, just out of curiosity?
Who EVER suggested hiring a high school coach?
Who actually believes that the program was only expected to win one round?
Yelin a step up from Mike? Seriously? My opinion is that your opinion is a joke.

Who did Yelin great winning percentage come from? Certainly not B10 level teams. You act like he was the coach that put UL on the map. The previous coach Don Hardin had a very similar record there and left a well stocked team to Yelin. Yelin promptly opened up his Russian pipeline. Well and good but in doing so he committed and was found guilty of a number of SERIOUS NCAA violations. And I've heard from a number of sources that he was ASKED to leave not leaving on his own. Does MN REALLY want a coach with that background no matter what his winning percentage is?

With a current salary pool of over $325,000 for the 3 paid coaches and a DOVO that is paid over $45,000 you would think this would be an fairly attractive job. Now I know that not everyone would be paid the $198,000 figure that Mike was getting but something more in the $150,000+ range I would guess would attract many. For Christy this might not be a raise at all if memory serves correct. With many establised coaches already making low 6 figures salaries it may not be worth the jump and job security they currently have to MN. This may be one of Carlston's reasons as well. He probably makes good money and would not get that big of a raise by going. Is Nao the highest paid DOVO in the country? Doesnt a head coach in the conference average 150,000?

Ok since it IS about me.. I was born and raised in Southern Calif. I moved to Minny in 76 and Minnesota ..VB was A JOKE..Be serious..if you are picking on Leos team being in a weak division what was Minnesota in a weak division? Minnesota couldn't win its own weak conference. BEFORE OR AFTER. Just for giggles ..how many times did Mike win it? Again..Mike is great but no where near perfect. Add another GREAT team to the big 10 conference and we go where..?? To Louisville in 2012? ( yes WE will be there) R,..where was the band, the cheerleaders..the student section for Mikes first 2 years..especially if we were sooo great before?? Where was the season ticket holders and Boosters So now others are offering bad info on the guy..for what ?? Did he stock it going forward for over 12 years ??..( if so I need you in the political section,) Like Mn has had a perfect record on anything. R I already posted all your answers..

Silly..?? That is what we are all about. You can Google Yelin's record..and see he is in the top 10 . and It's funny that he became available at the same time as I started posting about him.. I know those fan numbers are accurate..I was there. Talk to JT .. Mike had NOTHING at the start. We were happy to make any National run since it meant going west to Utah..and that was a great place to lose. The program went as far as it could go with Mike. I love the guy ..but his run was over..other schools caught up and past us. How? Based upon their recruiting and coaching base and junior programs and feeder systems they fed upon. Mike had used those systems UP to their potential..got as much out of the talent he had available. Leo would BROADEN that base while hopefully keeping some of the existing base. As for the foreign idea..Minnesota has brought players from all over the world and backgrounds before.. Same as FLORIDA or Louisville..or Wisconsin..or any other good or great winning program. Our University prides itself on diversity.. and the chances of him coming here are as great as any mentioned..better if wisdom is used. Actually it would be a STEP UP not down..and that cannot be said for any other HIRE. Pt.. set..and match. Uh, Mike has taken them as far as he could and on the way down? What are you smoking? He went to FF just a year ago, only team to beat PSU in the last 8 weeks of the season, and unbelieveably respected by just about everyone but you. I admit 5 years I ago I thought he was over the hill, proved me wrong by a long shot. Leonid is a good guy, good coach, but you have some serious rose colored glasses on if you think he has out performed Hebert. Sorry, but not game, set, match, I think it more like the 4-4-5-5 warm up period just started.

I only summited a Name that I thought was the best out there for This job and why.
I showed his record in a great career compared to Mike ..who we all agree is a great coach. His best year.. Yelins team beat Mikes best team. My daughter never let me forget..
The final 4's give Mike the edge as far as team going further..But Yelin is a worthy contender for this job opening when you compare where he has coached..his results and at every place he went he improved or won.
So My question is why all the arguments ?
Who have you summited who is better ?
If you can pick someone better? Please do..
My choice would win here next year. The only reason I summited the name.
My 2nd choice is still Northern Iowa.
I hope she isn't retired this week.
