All an IP address really tells you is which computer a particular transmission is coming from. But that doesn't necessarily mean it is the computer at which the human operator is sitting. There are pretty trivial ways to mask/spoof an IP address so that transmissions appear to be coming from elsewhere.
Of the two pieces of information, an email address is often the more immediately useful, particularly for gathering information on young people who either have spent so much of their social time online that they don't even think about how their surfing habits are tied together into a user profile behind the scenes, or they are indifferent to privacy concerns because they don't yet have established professional/personal lives which are worthy of protecting.

A lot of IP address bouncers are pretty obvious. You look it up and it'll typically be a well-known "anonymizer" - technically it's called an open proxy server. I don't think most people using such services care much that anyone knows it's being bounced off a third party as long as the original IP address isn't known. A lot of older message boards (and some still in operation) prominently display the IP address that the user posted from. Didn't the old 24/7 board do that? I remember posting to a men's BB board from a campus library after seeing a game; I was commenting about a game I just saw and it frankly gave a little bit of credibility that I wasn't lying about being on a visiting campus. I remember when PrepVB was running without passwords required. There was one particular poster (using several handles) who really irked the moderators. Tawa was threatening to ban entire IP address ranges that included the ones this guy would be found on. I think he even revealed a large portion of the IP addresses used to show he had that info. They eventually moved to only allowing registered users to post. I remember I used to participate on one of the FansOnly (eventually renamed Official College Sports Network, then CollegeSports.com, then CBS College Sports) boards. Someone told me that they had a quirk in their board software where a message posted included the user's email address in the raw HTML code for a displayed page. That was really odd, and I think most board software these days is more protective about something that obvious to find. Those used to be active boards, but they were gone within several years.

Folks, can we please get back on track? I know there isn't new news, but I enjoyed this thread a lot more when we were throwing out Minnesota speculations instead of talking about IT network addresses.
Any new rumors circulating? Has Brady even been contacted for an interview or are we still in a hold-up with the National Team?

So, is it safe to say Minnesota is moving past Hugh? Maybe Brady is the next head coach for the Gophers? Last I heard, Carlston still hadn't been contacted, but maybe his phone will be ringing soon.
The longer this drags out, it doesn't look like Scotty will get the throne. If the AD wanted to add stability to a program with rumored transfers - wouldn't he have ended all of the speculation by now and given it to Scott?

Because that would ease the minds of anyone who might be considering a transfer?

Because that would ease the minds of anyone who might be considering a transfer? There was chatter about Tabi Love considering transfer, are there others? Surely one of the wise guys on board here has inside knowledge. What's the buzz?

I honestly don't see anyone outside of maybe Nucci ( who I think would just call it quits) transferring this year. They only lose one player off a sweet 16 team. They possibly gain a better setter, and definitely gain a better passer in Hailey. If Filho can step up next year this team has the making of at least a final 4 team. I don't see these kids transferring without out giving the new coach a chance.
I really wish they would hire somebody soon. Minnesota could be missing out on some good recruiting time. I wouldn't mind if they picked up another DS next year. We seem to be really short on them this year. Plus Cowles, Granquist, and Menden all graduate next year. It would be nice if we had someone besides Sooter for the next year, and spending the year behind Granquist and Cowles would be good for any young player. Those 2 players know the game well.
