The notion that the vaunted, perennially ranked, U of Minn volleyball program, can do no better than plug the biggest fish from the small pond known as Div II astonishes me. But what do I know? I'm curious, though: What has been the track record of Div II coaches getting the reins of a top Div I team? Has it even happened before? Totally agree with you.

Minnesota really should look at just what the last Division II coach that won 4 National Championships has done when given the opportunity at Division I Oh wait, Russ Rose is the only other coach at any level to win 4 in a row. Brady is a very good coach no matter what the level. He would be a great hire for Minnesota.

Moody is assuming that being a head coach in div II and being a head coach in div I are more or less the same thing. Perhaps it is, but I assume the two jobs are quite different. Starkey hasn't coached a minute in Div I. I remember when Notre Dame football made Gerry Faust its head coach, because he had a tremendous record as a high school coach. That experiment failed completely. Again, I ask: is there precedent for a div II coach jumping to a top div I program, one that is expected to draw top recruits and 3,000 + crowds, and maintain its ranking, and doing well?

I'm not trying, nor would I ever, discredit Brady's accomplishments at Concordia. My worry is that the Big 10 is a different animal than the current D2 landscape and I'm not sure that Brady would be able to out coach or recruit Cook, Shondell, Rose, or Hambly. Minnesota would probably remain a mid-high tier team in the conference under Brady's guidance, but this is Minnesota's chance to bring in a coach that will get them over the existing hump to win conference and National titles.
As I've stated before, Hugh is my pick to do it shorterm. Why shorterm? Because his name alone would draw top recruits to the school with at the very least a direct pipeline to the NT. We'd have to wait and see if he can recruit for the longterm vision...but shorterm I think it's Hugh.

What do you mean by "the Big 10 is a different animal that the current D2 landscape" Shondell came from the high school ranks as did Dunning. Both seem to be doing alright. Brady would be a great hire for Minnesota. You don't win 4 National Championships without knowing what you are doing.

gogopher: There is a precedent in volleyball of high school coaches doing pretty well. Shondell and Dunning come to mind. There is no precedent, other than Starkey and Rose for winning 4 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS.

As we approach the 50 page mark and with the possibility of an announcement coming by the end of this month (yes, I'm aware that's next week), perhaps we should revisit a scenario similar to the 'Mick Haley/USC/WNT' one that has been previously mentioned.

Hugh has declined, besides he has not coached 1 minute of Division 1 volleyball which, according to gogopher is a prerequisite for the job.

Since Hugh's name has been tossed around for so long, now anybody other than Hugh is going to be a disappointment. That's my opinion, obviously.

Haha and more elbows are thrown simply because of a differing opinion.
Moody...no one is discrediting Coach Starkey's impressive streak...but is it your estimation that he can out-coach Dunning or Shondell? Again like I said earlier, Brady would keep Minnesota in the mid to high tier range in the conference - as did Coach Hebert - but I'm not sure he would win conference or national championships in this league. Maybe I'm wrong, but it's just a guess.

I will say it again 4 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. Brady can coach. Brady can recruit. Brady would be a great fit for Minnesota.
