Are we talking about the same thing. You're right Tabberson was ranked 33, which of course isn't in the top 25, but I believe all of the other players were. I don't know exactly how the rankings are determined, but I've read that Tawa bases them on input from college coaches. So the rankings correlate, I assume, with how much the college coaching base collectively would have wanted to recruit those players. Whether the player performed, once in college, commensurate with her senior high school ranking is a different matter altogether. Some exceed the hype, some don't. But if you're a college coach, aren't players ranked 20-25 the kind you want to take a chance on, if you can persuade them to come to your school?

No, you're right.
But I don't think Tawa top 25 automatically equates with elite players and I definitely don't think those players (the ones who came to Minnesota) are on a par with the players elite programs get.
Think of this. Minnesota was in the running for Sarah Pavan! Their consolation "prize" was Dee Jackson.
Furthermore, the program has not been using its full complement of scholarships for several years now. Why? Because they aren't getting the big fish -- Roleder, Lichtman, Werth, Hodge, etc. etc. The out-of-state elite don't come to Minnesota.
Seriously, though. I don't need any more enemies. I need to shut the heck up.
Is this dwelling on the negative? I don't think so. I'm just trying to be realistic. If Mike couldn't bring them in, can anyone?

Please don't "shut the heck up." You're not dwelling on the negative, and even if you were, so what? The board can always use honest opinion, even if it isn't the aren't-we-wonderful kind.

It would be interesting to see what CJ could do with McNeil for four years.
I hope that Tabi Love decides to stay. She was a better player this year than last year. It's too bad that she was slowed down with injuries and sickness late in the season, though. There's no reason to think that she won't keep getting better and better. I hope she stays.

I see no evidence that it's easier to recruit elite VB players to Minnesota than it is to ISU. Aside from Berg and Love, what top recruits came to Minnesota from out-of-state? Mike was able to get the attention of some top recruits, but they didn't come here. That's always going to be a huge challenge for Minnesota volleyball. The Gophers have been to 3 FFs in the last 8 years and the commitments still aren't materializing. This is also why Mike deserves so much credit for what's been built here. He did it with in-state talent plus players like Branagh, Martin, Gentil and Bratford (and again I include Nelson as an honorary Minnesotan). Gentil

I believe Cathy Noth is still involved in volleyball and lives in the Minneapolis area.

I believe Cathy Noth is still involved in volleyball and lives in the Minneapolis area. She is listed as a Setter Coach on the Nortern Lights Juniors' website.

It would be even harder for CJ to leave ISU, since she just recently got 6'1" Andie Malloy from Lovejoy (TX) to commit there for 2012, one of the top hitter/setter recruits in that class. She's won 3 straight state titles...

It would be really hard to hit the ground running in Mpls with a new baby.

For no good reason other than boredom, an attempt to list Mike's scholarship recruits at Minnesota:
Sue Shudlick (although not his recruit actually) Branagh Posthuma Baxter Aschenbrenner Glaser Dulder Berg Hagen Wichert Brafford Martin Bratford VanderWell Freiborg Busse I know her name. One of my favorites even. Aaarrg. Played middle, then right. Jess. Byrnes! Gentil Busse Peniata Nelson Bowman Jones Jackson Hartmann Schmidt Roehrig Vatterrodt Hagerty Phillips Tan Gibbemeyer Cowles Dieter Haugen Dittrich Filho Blatt Granquist Love Tabberson Harms Wittman Dixon McNiel Bohl Daugaard
I've attempted chronological order, too, but I'm afraid I failed there.
Now, 10 pts for each one I missed, without Google or Kern. The kid from Belize, for instance.
Transfers: Linda Shudlick, Noble, the kid from Mahtomedi who had to retire (Jill ...), Tilson, Florian, Cumpston, Carico, Nucci. I'm drawing a blank on the rightside from two years ago. Shame on me. Luiz, right?

Mallakis!
Cipperly!
There was the setter we had for one year. Schneider?
Still can't remember the kid from Belize's name. Carlston, btw, was the connection there.
And Reinhart was worth a scholarship. Or two.
I should try to list the DSs ...
