Banquet was nice. The focus was on the team's season, not Mike's retirement. That was saved for the retirement party. Nucci and Love were the only two players who weren't there. Love is looking at other schools, but nobody is quite sure why. If it's good for the team, it would be nice to have her stay. Hailey is still coming back in the fall. Kelly McNeil and her Mom were there, too. (Maybe others from her family.) They are sweet and humble.
Best moments were: > The season video recap projected on the football stadium's jumbo screen, seen from the posh club room on the sixth floor suite seats. > Lauren's Grandma presenting her with a personal gift. > Nao having to introduce the MVP (had to be there), "Number five." LMAO
No word on when an announcement is coming. The players don't seem at all concerned. I still think it's Hugh w/ interim. But I see Geoff Carlson as the darkhorse...
Someone else can probably give a better recap of the retirement party, but there were a number of former players there, including from his Illinois days. Also, Gibby, Marci Peniata, Meredith Nelson and Becky Bauer all spoke. And Katreen DeDecker flew in from Belgium. Nice.

I forgot to ask Nao about it. We know Texas is coming here in the fall. And we are still part of the AVCA showcase (I assume), so we will play USC and Washington, right? I think they were the schools along with Nebraska, which is no longer in the picture. So we know our preseason will be challenging. I don't think the spring will be that interesting, given the travel rules. Likely teams are Northern Iowa, Iowa State, NDSU, etc.

At Mike's retirement celebration there was a video that featured former players Cassie Busse, Meredith Nelson, Steph (Hagen), Hailey Cowles. Jessica Granquist, and Tori Dixon as well as coaches Mick Haley, Russ Rose and Dave Shoji.
There were many former players the a nice Illinois contingent. I'm sure Mike appreciated seeing the masses. The event was very nice and well put together.

Nao's presentation at Mike's reception was hilarious!!
The Illini players had great stories, too.
It was a great time. Great turnout for both the banquet (around 125) and the reception (much more than that).

Oh, and Mike announced the new coach at his reception.
Homer Simpson.
Really had some people going!

What a dissappointment to log in this evening thinking that I might actually hear some good news about the gophers, like who the new coach will be, only to hear that it STILL hasn't been announced and on top of that, the rumors about Love transferring seem to be more true than rumor. Oh, and not even a spring schedule to boot.

Why is Love leaving and what is Nucci doing? Is Nucci hanging it up or going to transfer once again?

more importantly who would take Love? no offense...... Pretty uncalled for. She's a good offensive player and could be great in the right system with the right training.

Well I hope that she decides to stay. She's shown improvement over the last two seasons. I'm not sure what her reasons would be to transfer. If it's because she thinks she's not getting the training she deserves, then I'm not sure how many programs are really going to give her any better training than what she's gotten from Coach Hebert at MN. If she doesn't mesh well with the other players, then I guess I understand that. If she's scared about a new coach, then she should probably just hang on until things get settled. Just my two cents worth.

Just my two cents worth. The problem is if she hangs around too long she won't be able to find anywhere to transfer for the upcoming season, and if that happens she has what one season left? That rules out any schools where she would have to sit out for a year. I guess if she wants to do it, she just should. She doesn't owe them anything at this point.

Just my two cents worth. Really? REALLY!?! 300 plus coaches would send someone else packing to get Love on their team. If she decides to transfer on July 31st, SOMEBODY in the top 25 will find a spot for her.
