So..MN went with the 2nd best option available. This is basically saying the AD is running the show. NOT great. So now will Hugh be able to bring all those foreign players from down under to give MN the edge. This brings in those pesky NCAA rules since his now announced. and can he get 50 of the top 50 world class players to come to Mn for try outs? the answer will be no. watch for the transfers out and our record no better than 5th next year. Somehow I knew Jt was watching.. Transfers out because.......? And, shouldn't the AD run the show? If Hugh was the 2nd best choice, who was the first? Definitely not the Russian.

I could not be happier. I'm still shocked it happened.
Go Laura!

Getting a gold medal winning coach is the 2nd best option? Really?
Any hire has risks, including this one. I think it will work out great for everyone involved. Certainly did not hurt USC when they waited a couple of years for Mick to finish his Olympic commitment.
Also not sure how big a deal the NCAA rules will be. He is still not getting a paycheck from the university and NCAA rules have numerous exemptions for national team involvement. He will not be on teh recruiting trail for Minnesota just yet, but he can invite the best high school athletes to work out with national team just as Mick did (Ogonna Nnami is best illustration).
Regardless of what some on here say - I disagree - this is a good hire for Minnesota.

And, shouldn't the AD run the show? Of course not, Ugopher. Bill should run the show, because he is apparently the only person alive who knew who the 1st best choice was. See? Even when you know who it is, you don't know who it is. Proof positive that Bill should have been making the decision.

Because there is no stability..an interim cannot recruit..sorry ..just the principle of the idea.
MY take..2nd best option is because he wasn't hired to be the head coach starting today. To arrive at that stability.
His assistants will be different than those appointed for the interim..
I really think this position is more important for MN fans and players than the national team.
If this was the guy and will receive the huge contract..he should show his loyalties now..not later..where he might decide not to even be the coach.
So this hire will not even have any recruits for 2 years and a record reflecting that for at least 3 years later?
Kinda like the presidents health care program. we are supposed to feel better now ..pay now and get benefits later..maybe.

If Hugh is staying with the national team until after London (looks to be the case) the assistants for Laura have already been determined. Look for another announcement in the near future. Cound Marci Peniata be one of the assistants?

I would think recruiting for Minnesota just got easier. All Laura has to say is "you will be playing for the US Olympic team coach". As far as assistants, a recruit should never base their committment on assistant coaches. They come and go all the time.

To arrive at that stability. Well, in that case, the 1st best option wasn't available, since Hugh wouldn't accept starting today. That makes your "2nd best" option the best that was possible in this reality. That's good enough for me.

That being said, I happen to think that Karellen DOES know what he's talking about. Apparently so.
