Kahuku's Peters ready to sign with Fresno State
By Dennis Anderson Advertiser Staff Writer
Hawai'i's boys and girls volleyball Players of the Year and an all-state football player have decided on colleges.
Tuli Peters, who led Kahuku to its first state girls volleyball championship in November, said she is "95 percent certain" that she will attend Fresno State.
Isaac Knuebuhl of Kamehameha, who won the boys top player honor the past two years, has signed a binding letter of intent with Cal State-Northridge.
And 2001 all-state running back Kalena Ho'okano of Kamehameha, who attended Eastern Arizona community college last fall, has signed with Portland State.
Peters said that BYU-Hawai'i was still trying to change her mind but that she expected to sign with the Bulldogs when the late signing period begins April 16.
"It's got a good academic program, the volleyball team seems strong (the Bulldogs went 23-7 and finished second to Hawai'i in the WAC last season), and La'akea Campbell (2001 all-stater from Iolani) likes it there," Peters said.
Knuebuhl, a 6-foot-3 outside hitter from Pukalani, Maui, said Northridge "scouted me from Junior Olympics. They made me feel like they would really like me to be on the team.
"I didn't want to be in the cold on the East coast," he said.
As for Kamehameha's other two first-team all-state players, Willy Melemai will go to Hawai'i and Jarrett Day is deciding between LaVerne in California and Loyola of Chicago, coach Pono Maa said.
Nice pick up for Northridge. I wonder why UH never recruited him or if he even would have gone UH. Anyone know if anyone going to Hawaii from UH.

whoo hoo for Kelena (the dude spelled his name wrong! haha)...he's a good running back...not to swift in the head though... Jarrett should play for UH! we could use him....it could be a pretty powerful team! I think Eric Kalima will do great things next season.

Anyone know if anyone going to Hawaii from UH. I hope UH can land that left-handed hitter from Pearl City High School. I can't remember his name, but, he moved here to Hawaii from the mainland to learn more about his Hawaiian background and its culture (kind of like Lily Kahumoku's story). Anyone remember his name? I know his name was mentioned here on the board a few months back. Anyways, he was the star player for PCHS and made first team for the state.

Pretty sure his name is Jonathan Charette. I actually saw him play 2 or 3 times and yes, he's legit. When they had the Championship game between Pearl City and Kamehameha, they said Charette would like to play for Hawaii, but so far UH has only one commit.
Yenno, that Pearl City team had a very good team. 4 or 5 pretty good players.

I'm glad to hear that Isaac Kneubuhl will be furthering his volleyball career. Isaac is an awesome player and I had the privilege of playing with him in intermediate school until he departed to Kamehameha Schools. I think that he will be an asset to Northridge and he will be successful in NCAA division I volleyball. Good luck to Isaac in his future at Northridge.
I also hope that Jonathan Charette will play for UH because I think he will be an asset to the team with his lefty swing. He was an awesome player this year for Pearl City. And yes Pearl City had an awesome team this year with players such as Chris Kaneko, Kalei Ka`ana`ana and Kapena Wong that helped Jonathan Charette lead the Chargers to the state championship. Hopefully those other players will further their career at some college.
I would just like to wish good luck to all these Hawaiian players that will be pursuing a high education and furthering their volleyball careers.

We were planning on featuring Jon Charette (sp?) this year but you know... things happen. (*shrugging*) We had some initial problems locating the boy and I think it had something to do with change of high schools and clubs. Pearl City would have been an extra bonus because, I think, former UH RS Jenny Wilton coaches there (someone correct me if I'm wrong). It would have been nice to interview Jenny given that I also know her babysitter from her San Luis Obispo days when dad Mike was the head coach for Cal Poly.

I heard from sources that Melissa Wilton is no longer playing volleyball in college and is back in the islands.
If I'm not mistaken, Jenny Wilton has more then one child and last I heard was married to former Warrior baseball player Harold Cabab. I think Jenny Wilton is an assistant volleyball coach somewhere but I'm not really sure where.
Jenny Wilton use to be seen at Warrior volleyball games, but I haven't seen much of her lately, but her mom is still a frequent fan at the Warrior volleyball games.

Thanks for the article.
A quote:
"Jenny is married to former Hawaii baseball player Harold Cabbab and has two children, 5-year old Taylor and 2-year old Jayden. She's still involved in volleyball, coaching at Pearl City High School with former teammate Stephanie Shota."
Well, I was sort of right about Jenny. In 2002 when this article appeared, Jenny Wilton WAS involved with Pearl City HS. In what capacity, I don't know.
