I don't make it a habit to watch women's basketball, but last night while at the gym I watched as Penn State gave their game away to DePaul in front of a partially filled gym in Happy Valley. Later, Gonzaga upset UCLA in front of a packed house in Spokane.
So, Penn State fans, why so little love for women's basketball? A bigger and more boisterous crowd would have made the difference in the outcome.

I think the energy of the crowd helped Gonzaga win the game against UCLA. Taking the opposing viewpoint, that is a reason not to allow teams to play at home in the NCAA tournament. It is not a neutral environment.

Women's basketball sucks, that's why.

I was wondering the same thing while watching last night…what a shame. I just don’t understand why the non-football teams can’t get the support they deserve. More promotion needed, or just disinterested students? I understand the importance of the Jordan Center, but Rec Hall is far more intimidating and capable of being packed. I was there when they “Packed the Track” in Rec Hall for the women’s basketball game (who was ranked No. 1 at the time) against Iowa in 1994. Thrilling win, and loud as heck. Bring the games back there every so often! (And I’m still disappointed that the volleyball team doesn’t get sell-out crowds.) I watched the Gonzaga/UCLA game, and it was so exciting. That atmosphere was missing in the PSU/DePaul game.
Having said that, I never think it’s fair that a lower-seeded team gets to host a higher one in a tournament. Doesn’t make any sense. Still, the Lady Lions should have/could have won that. So heartbreaking. But chin up…what a great accomplishment for Coquese Washington and the team this year: got the team back in the rankings (briefly), second-place conference finish and appearance in the title game, into the tourney, a win against a solid Dayton team and just a few points away from the Sweet 16. It’s a young team, and they’ll grow. It’s something to build on, and I hope they can do even better next year. (Also hoping that Jeff Thompson can bring the women’s gymnastics team to the next level…came so close last weekend to FINALLY beating Michigan at Big Tens, but not quite yet! He seems like a great fit.)
And can someone please tell me why Trey Wingo kept introducing Carolyn Peck as “The Coach Carolyn Peck”? It was driving me crazy. He also kept reciting a misleading stat—that the Lady Lions had never lost a tourney game at home. They had never lost at the BJC, but they were upset a few times at Rec Hall: including devastating losses to Georgetown and N.C. State (which I saw in person).
(And on a completely juvenile note, did anyone else hear when the commentator on the PSU/DePaul broadcast used the phrase “caught Harry ball watching”? I almost died laughing on my couch. Yes, I’m 12. Sorry…)
