A few people have "invited" me to join this. Says on Wiki it is useful when looking for a job. Is it really, or is it just them advertising their stuff? I have 2 sons looking for jobs this summer. Would this site be useful?
Another tech question: Got an email from someone informing me they are now following me on twitter. Since I don't have a twitter account, how are they following me, and how did they get my email?

Re: Linked In. It's pretty useful as a networking tool. It's like Facebook for professionals so no stupid games or pokes. It's a really good way to set up and detail your professional accomplishments and goals. The HR monkeys here look for anything they can find online to see potential hires digital footprints. This one is a good one to have for jobs, networking and headhunting.
Re: Twitter. Don't really know, but it would be a good idea to change your e-mail password just in case.

I am a Linkedin member, but it's so text-heavy and busy even on its front pages, that it really turns me off and I hardly use it. Then again, I'm not super hardcore looking for jobs or anything, so if I were I'd probably add more info to my page. I am connected to a few people whom I would absolutely recommend, and have given recommendations for a couple through the website.

I'm on LinkedIn. It does help me keep in touch with people in my line of work. There are a good number of ways to do this. One is to just put yourself in and then add a number of contacts. The site is a little bit like a pyramid scheme. Say I was surfing and found a job I liked in company A. I could get on LinkedIn to see if there are people in my network who works for that company or is a mover and a shaker in the network. If there is, you can get people within your network to introduce you to that specific person.
Another way to do it is through an interest group. People have set these up either as a constituency group, say environmental engineers. or it is through a professional society like IEEE. People will post openings on the groups so that it goes out to other people who are in that group.
Some of the group discussions are pretty lively and you can actually get to meet a lot of people in your profession that way.
It is a little clumsy but so far I have been able to keep in touch with a lot of colleagues and met a bunch more. Haven't gotten a job through LinkedIn yet but I have gotten a lot of contacts with headhunters.

Thanks for the info. Doesn't really sound like something I would need. Maybe my sons should do it, however. Thanks again.

my career is a very limited field, but i think it can be very useful for networking if your career is a broader field.
