How good was he in volleyball? I see him in AZ basketball and they mention that he is one of the best in the nation in both basketball and volleyball

chase was dominant in volleyball. i had a pleasure of seeing him play at the junior olympics in minneapolis last summer. he was a man amongst boys, even when he played against other future d1 players from teams like surf city, synergy, and outrigger canoe club.
he was a dream outside for any team: size 6'8, quick feet, awesome agility, swings high, powerful arm, good jump serve, good passer.
head and shoulders ahead of all the other players at the junior olympics. maybe with the exception of his club mate garret matui. who is now a budding star at ucla. i believe chase was mvp of the junior olympics.
if there's one player i would compare chase with who is now in div. 1, i would say yosleyder cala from byu. same size, same athletic ability and skill level. only cala isn't going to make millions in the nba!
don't know if he is one of the best in the nation coming out of high school last year for basketbal, but i don't think anyone can say he wasn't THE best for volleyball. for those who saw him play at the junior olympics this past summer, we may have witness chase play his last competitive volleyball.

A friend of mine whom I coach with and is a prominent Div. I mens coach said that he could take time off for a couple of years and still come back to play Volleyball and STILL dominate. He was a starter on the Youth National Team AND the Junior National Team. I think he did both when he was also a Junior. I first saw him in the Tournament of Champions at Cal State Northridge when he was a freshman and was MVP. He was so non-chalant about it and I remember every time that I have coached against him. One word UNSTOPPABLE!!!

From the sound of what guys say, he must be great! I'll watch that video now. To bad he didn't continue volleyball then. However he has done well for Arizona basketball, with only 1 loss now this season.

Does anyone know why he thought that he had to choose between basketball and volleyball? I think I read somewhere that he preferred basketball over volleyball (of course, if it were based solely on earning potential, basketball was the clear choice). It could very well have been just a personal choice. I'm sure this was discussed in length somewhere on this board.
He excels in both sports that I think if he had chosen to play, let's say at UCLA, he could have gotten an NCAA championship in both basketball AND volleyball. Not only is this an attainable goal, but, there is the possibility of multiple rings. I'm only stating UCLA as an example because right now the UCLA basketball program is back in the limelight, being ranked #1 and the runner-up in last year's championship game. The men's volleyball program will always be a contender for the title and, of course, they're the defending national champions.
I just think Chase Budinger could have really set some new NCAA records. It would have also been great for men's volleyball.

Sports Illustrated did a nice write up on him. (early Dec?) I remember it quoting Coach Olsen saying he would release him to play VB in the olympics if he wanted to.

Why Didn't He Go To UCLA?
Because Ben Howland is not interested in players who don't play defense!

I could be wrong as the school I play for is Division III, but at least where I'm at, you can't play both basketball and volleyball, as the seasons overlap. Regardless of how good he is physically, it'd be hard for a volleyball team to play without a guy for a few months, then when it's getting to crunch time have a new player who hasn't played for a few months get into the mix and start gelling with new teammates. Would love to see him play volleyball, but can't blame the guy for focusingly primarily on the sport that could make sure he's set for life by his early to mid 20's.

I heard Jamie D. of UCLA's volleyball team couldn't join their basketball team because of scholarship issues. However he was a walk-on practice player earlier in the season.
