LONG BEACH, CA -- In an exhibition match, the Long Beach State 49ers defeated the Hope International Royals 3-1 at the Walter Pyramid on Wednesday evening. Game scores were 30-24, 28-30, 30-19, 30-21.
Paul Lotman led the 49ers with 25 kills to go along with four service aces. Norm Hutton registered 23 kills for a .475 attack percentage. Adam Schlesinger directed the 49er offense to a .323 attack percentage with 56 assists.
“I thought we played alright at times,” said Head Coach Alan Knipe. “We won decisively in some games, which was good, but missed some opportunities early and got better as the match went on. We got a match under our belts for some of the guys and that’s what is important.”
Yeshua Goodman had 13 kills for Hope International in the losing effort.
Long Beach State came on strong midway through the first game to pull away with a 30-24 victory. The 49ers jumped out to an early 7-3 lead, but the Royals then went on a 5-0 run capped by a Nelson Hernandez and Mike Murphy block to take an 8-7 lead. The two teams battled back and forth until the 49ers eventually pulled ahead 25-20 after a hitting error by the Royals. A double block by Lotman and Bittman put LBSU up 29-24 and a hitting error by Hope ended the first stanza.
The 49ers gave up a late four point lead (25-21) in game two as they fell to the Royals 28-30. Long Beach pulled ahead 22-20 after a pair of kills from Lotman and a Hope service error. The 49ers then went on a 5-0 run capped by a Hutton kill to take the lead 25-21. Hope came back and tied the game at 28-28 after a service error by Hutton. The Royals were able to hold on and close out the second stanza after two consecutive hitting errors by LBSU.
The 49ers regained the momentum in game three as they cruised to a 30-19 victory, hitting .591. LBSU pulled ahead 24-17 after a kill by Lotman. The 49ers went on a 6-2 run to close out the set with an ace from Dan Alexander.
LBSU carried the momentum over to game four as they went on to a 30-21 victory. LBSU hit .342 in the final set.
The 49ers will begin their regular season this weekend at the UC Santa Barbara/E-Bar Tournament where they will take on CS Northridge in a first-round match on January, 5 at 1:00 pm.
