Title says it all.
UCI took down Northridge in 4 games, 3rd games was the csun win. Wasn't too close, Irvine handled them pretty well. Wasn't particularly impressed by CSUN, had a lot of errors, play overall was kind of bleh, and they really only have one offensive player, Nargi. Northridge must've been called for being in the net AT LEAST a dozen times. Practically handed the match to them.
3rd game was nasty though. Looked like both teams were trying to lose it. CSUN would net, then UCI would miss a serve. Then CSUN would net, then UCI would miss a serve. Repeat several times. Painful to watch.
UCI's starting to play better again. Pelzel was on fire. They're hurting in the middle with Weichert out, Keenan is going to hit 1.000 against those middles on Thursday.

CSUN 26 30 30 22 UCI.. 30 32 27 30
Game two, UCI was out of the gates quick and CSUN subbed out 3 starters, including the setter.
UCI gave up a big lead late in that game and it was point swapping from the mid 20's. And exciting game.
UCI dominated game four with some highlight digs, monster roofs and Pelzel adding to his career best 35 kill total
We noted that Ford had an exceptional passing game for UCI.

Boxscore at www.mvball.uci.edu/Boxscores/2003/UCIMVB24.HTMPELZEL'S CAREER-HIGH 35 POWERS UCI PAST CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE (boxscore) Irvine, CA - Jimmy Pelzel pounded a career-high 35 kills to lead No. 8 UC Irvine past No. 7 Cal State Northridge, 3-1 (30-26, 32-30, 27-30, 30-22) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match in Crawford Hall Saturday. The Anteaters improve to 17-8 overall and 10-8 in MPSF play, while Cal State Northridge goes to 16-10 on the year and 11-9 in league action. UCI took game one 30-26 then jumped out to a 17-11 lead in game two. The Matadors trailed 25-20 when UCI had five consecutive unforced errors to knot the game at 25-25. Cal State Northridge took the lead on a Tamer George kill high off the block, 26-25. The teams traded points until UCI's Russ Marchewka served a dribbler over the net to give UCI the 31-30 advantage. Nic Vislay put down a kill off an overpass to clinch the game for the Anteaters, 32-30. Game three had UCI leading 11-9 before the Matadors ran off seven consecutive points to go ahead 15-11. The score ping-ponged back and forth until a Joe Nargi kill gave Northridge the 27-26 advantage. A Matador block put them up 28-26 before a UCI kill closed it back to 27-28. Consecutive kills by Scott Areneson and Cary Hanson gave Cal State Northridge the game 30-27. The Anteaters reeled off six unanswered points to lead 15-7 in game four. The Matadors could get as close as seven the rest of the way as UCI cruised to a 30-22 win in game four. Pelzel's 35 kills is a career-high and is tied for ninth in the UCI record books. It is the second most kills in a match since the sport went to rally scoring, following Erick Helenihi's 36 in 2002. The 35 kills is also the most by an MPSF player this season. Pelzel hit .538 (35-7-52) for the match and added six blocks assists. Spencer Bemus added 15 kills in the win, while Monte Tucker and Russ Marchewka each had eight kills. Tucker and Greg Ford had a team-high nine digs, while Nic Vislay had a match-high nine blocks. David Kniffin recorded 61 assists. Tamer George led the Matadors with 17 kills followed by Joe Nargi's 15 kills. Stan Douglass totaled 14 kills and hit .571 (14-2-21) on the evening. Nargi also added nine digs. Next, the Anteaters will travel to No. 1 Pepperdine Thursday (Apr. 3) for a 7:00 p.m. match

In the UCSB match, no. Dane played the last 2 games, but Jarret never came in. That is seriously too bad. I guess the coaches are oblivious to situations like this, but two brothers meeting for the last possible time in head to head competition! Not even for one serve? That's surely a life long dream down the drain.
