49ers Win MPSF Opener With a 3-0 Sweep Over Tritons
Beach Defeats UCSD; Travel to USC and Pepperdine Next Week
LONG BEACH, CA -- The No.10-ranked Long Beach State 49ers (3-1, 1-0 MPSF) cruised to a 3-0 victory over the UC San Diego Tritons (0-1, 0-1 MPSF) in their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener on Friday night at The Walter Pyramid. Game scores were 30-20, 30-23, 30-22.
Paul Lotman led the 49ers with 15 kills for a .407 clip. Norm Hutton added 13 kills hitting .455, while Teddy Liles hit .500 as he chipped in 10 kills. Dustin Watten led LBSU with 12 digs and Conor Eaton dished out 44 assists directing the 49er offense to a .396 hitting percentage.
“I thought we passed pretty well and our blocking and defense improved as the match went on,” said Head Coach Alan Knipe, whose team out blocked UCSD 13.0 to 6.5. “We didn’t have a whole lot of hitting errors tonight and we played pretty well overall. I am very pleased with the effort.”
Will Ehrman led the Tritons with 12 kills, and Frank Fritsch chipped in nine kills. Tim Dietrich hit .833 (5-0-6) on the evening. Brooks Dierdorff had 30 assists in the losing effort, as UCSD hit .147.
The 49ers pulled away midway through the first set to take a 30-20 game one victory. Gavin Christensen started the game off with an ace and LBSU jumped out to a 6-2 lead following a Triton hitting error. UCSD came back to tie the game at 6-6 and took their first lead of the match at 11-10 after a kill by Adrian Guthals. The Tritons never trailed by more than two until the 49ers went on an 8-0 run to take a 27-18 lead. A kill from Dean Bittner put LBSU up by five, 23-18, forcing a Triton timeout. The 49ers then scored four straight points coming out of the timeout capped by a Hutton kill, giving LBSU a 27-18 lead.. A kill by Lotman put the 49ers up 29-20 and a hitting error by Ehrman closed out the set.
The 49ers hit an impressive .516 in game one, led by Hutton who had six kills and a .714 hitting percentage. LBSU held the Tritons to a .184 hitting percentage.
In game two, the 49ers gained a comfortable lead early in the set and went on to a 30-23 victory. LBSU took a six point lead, 15-9, after a kill by Bittner. The Tritons pulled back within three points at 18-15 after consecutive aces from Jason Spangler, but the 49ers then went on an 8-3 run to go up 26-18 after a Triton hitting error. A hammer by Liles in the middle gave LBSU a 29-22 lead. The Tritons were able to hold off one game point, but a kill by Lotman ended the second set. The 49ers hit .323 in game two.
The Tritons hung with the 49ers in game three until Tyler Caldwell served eight straight points recording one ace as LBSU took a 29-20 lead. A Hutton kill gave the 49ers the 30-22 game three win.
The 49ers are next in action when they travel to USC on January 17 to begin a two-game road trip.
