Fort Wayne, IN - Head Coach Arnie Ball's IPFW Mastodon men's volleyball squad looked in mid-season form on Friday night, at the Hilliard Gates Sports Center. The Volleydons took care of visiting Saint Francis (PA) in three straight in the 'Dons opening match of the season.
The #7 Mastodons dropped the Red Flash by the final of 30-21, 30-19, and 30-26.
IPFW's junior All-America outside hitter, C.J. Macias, got the 'Dons going early with six kills in the first set.
Between the arm swing of Macias and the blocking of senior middle Vitor Oliveira, who had five block assists, IPFW had little trouble taking a 1-0 lead.
IPFW picked up their hitting in the second set, finishing with a crisp .458 on 15 of 24 hitting with only four errors.
Saint Francis' turned to athletic middle hitter Marc Honore for some offense, and he provided it. Honore put down a team-high 15 balls, but it wasn't enough as the Mastodon offense continued to click.
Macias finished the match with 20 kills, hitting .548, which was just shy of his career-high .552 set against Clarke last season.
Macias also had five of the 'Dons 25 block assists in the match. He finished the night with eight digs.
Oliveira, who replaces Serdar Sikca in the middle, had a fantastic debut with seven block assists and five kills.
Senior outside hitter Josh Collins put down nine balls and hit .467. The Mastodons as a team hit .412 in the match.
Senior setter Colin Lundeen registered 38 assists to go along with his seven digs.
Honore led the Red Flash (1-1) with 15 kills (.500).
As a team, IPFW out blocked Saint Francis 12.5 to 5.5.
The 'Dons will look to make it 2-0 as they host fellow NCAA semi-finalist #8 Penn State tomorrow night at 7pm at the Gates Center. Penn State topped Ball State 3-0 tonight in Muncie, Indiana.
