Uh no pal, this bubble needs to be burst right now....NIRSA vball is not like march madness. There are teams in our conference that haven't beaten others in 10 years! And there are teams that I remember playing at H-I that a top 10 team would beat 100 times out of 100. At this level the disparity in talent is huge and sometimes a top ten team will go all year long w/o losing to a team ranked 15-25 even if they play 10 times. U will see upsets, but they are so scarce, especially early season. The established programs have more practice and chemistry at this time of year, and those teams that may come out of seemingly nowhere at nationals do it cuz they finally put it together and maybe those more established programs have a burn-out factor.
I don't think you'll ever see an unranked team win a big tournament in NIRSA...unless they find some loop holes to bring in ringers.

Certainly the gap is bigger between a top 10 team and a #30-40 team in NIRSA, but just based on rankings, I don't think a team like Texas A+M, Notre Dame, Ohio Northern and Penn State do not fall into that category. You may not lose to an unranked team in your tenure at Oshkosh but 4 of the top 6 teams in the semi's is by no means assured.
The other thing is what fun is it to pick the favorites every time?

Here are the official Hoosier-Illini pools. They will be posted on our website later today once I fix a technical issue. Since the "anticipation is killing" some people, I figured I'd satisfy your club volleyball appetite for the day by posting here first. Pool A: UW-Oshkosh "A" Purdue Pittsburgh Indiana "B" Pool B: Arizona Dayton Iowa St. College of DuPage Pool C: Penn St. Ohio Northern Missouri UW-Milwaukee Pool D: Illinois Marquette Navy Vincennes Pool E: Lakeland Florida St. Miami (OH) Wright St. Pool F: Texas A & M Indiana Baldwin-Wallace Kentucky Pool G: Colorado Northern Illinois Cincinnati UW-Oshkosh "B" Pool H: Michigan St. Virginia Tech UW-Platteville Georgia Pool I: Notre Dame Ohio St. Illinois "B" Western Illinois Pool J: Central Florida Wisconsin Buffalo Ball St. Here's a link to where they will be posted and where the schedule and results can be found after today. www.iub.edu/~imvbc/pages/hiclassic0.htmlAlso, everyone coming to Bloomington should be advised that the temperatures could reach the mid-60's this weekend! Nice...

Pool G: Colorado Northern Illinois Buffalo UW-Oshkosh "B"
If Oshkosh's B team is on par with other years, then Pool G looks particularly rough.

Also Pool I, with ND, OSU, Illinois B, and Western Illinois. Anyone of the top 3 teams could win that pool.

Will, as you probably understand, the winner of the initial pools funnel into a crossover round where team play for the higher seed between the two teams. The winner of the tough pools G, I, etc have nothing to lose by playing Arizona or whatever top seed they play in the Challenge Round. For the Pool Winners, this round serves as a way to get the top teams more top-level competition, while still fitting into the format of the tournament. :-)

I guess I can't complain but how'd #18 Central Florida get a one seed of #11 Wisconsin?

And I expect the lower seeds will welcome the challenge. I do however say jokingly that the winner of that pool will play 4 extremely competitive matches on day 1 culminating in a team like Arizona. That is a great "reward" for winning a tough pool, ANOTHER ROUGH MATCH. Thats all, just a tough tournament overall, I like it.

Oh and about the unranked teams and upsets. This is a perfect tournament where a team outside the top four can win the tournament, and its due to cross-over matches. Say for example as in the above post, the 2 seed Arizona loses its crossover match to lets say ND. For tournament purposes they become the 9 seed. They are now on the same side of the bracket as #1 Oshkosh, and should play them in the round of 8. However, ND has diluted their side of the bracket and now can get to the semi's w/o a problem where they face someone like the Penn State/Michigan State Cross-over winner. One more upset and we have some issues. I am not saying any of this happens but it is a good possibility.

agreed. the illinois, marquette, navy pool is intriguing. illionois gets their shot at revenge against marquette from the iowa fall tournament (even though it was early in the season). also, you can't sleep on a navy team that made it to gold last year in SLC, and ironically, lost to marquette in the first round, so they too will get a shot at revenge.

That's the problem with crossover matches....u put a huge emphasis on one match while the three you play before that make less of a difference...while I love havin more than three matches in a day, maybe a power pool is more of a good measuring stick to decide exactly where teams belong. Eh but no excuses....just win every match you play in and u don't have to worry about even the most rediculous formats (see MIVA tournament)
