Wow, that is a lot of injuries for the Bruin team!
How do you call that hit on Rich Nelson: not a six-pack, chester, etc but what?

With all those injuries you would expect them to practice somewhere, anywhere else!

Is Pat Nihipali a feshman at UCLA? Did he redshirt cause I don't see his name in the statsheets?
I see that Matt McKinney is playing on the vball team. Did he redshirt his basketball season? Or did he quit the basketball team for this season?

I think Pat is red-shirting this year and Matt is red-shirting basketball, but has and will play for coach Scates this year.

I think P. Smith is injured as well as D. Russell. Too bad, because the Bruins sure can use them now.

Rofer's quote was amusing (At this rate, assistant coach Brian Rofer might as well go on the injury list himself. "I have this headache that's not going away," he said.).
Even Scates was laughing at his team's situation. Sounds like they're taking it all in stride, at least. But how much concern is there really in the Bruin camp?
Has Acosta shown any signs of the abdomen strain he struggled with previously? He seemed to be the missing link on the outside for them last year?

I was just wondering how you know whether or not someone is redshirting? Can they suit up for a match but retain redshirt status if they don't play? If they play in pre-season matches can they still redshirt? I know there is a medical redshirt for someone who is injured, but I am just talking about healthy players. For example, for UCLA, David Russell suited up for one match this season but didn't play. I thought he was going to redshirt, but there have been so many injuries at the quick hitter spot, who knows? Pat Nihipali played for a few minutes during pre-season, but hasn't suited up or traveled with the team since. Could someone explain how it works?

A redshirt can suit up and remain a redshirt as long as they dont get subbed in the game. Its unlikely that they would even suit up if they were going to redshirt because a coach would likely want to keep his bench at 12 useable players. But a player can suit up as long as they dont play. Medical redshirts are totally different stories. For the women, its around 6 games. If a player plays in 6 games and gets hurt, that player can red shirt due to injury. But that has to be at the beginning of the season. A player cannot get hurt during the beginning of the season and play in those 6 games in the post season and retain redshirt status. Additionally, there are rules for redshirting due to pregnancy but not something the men have to worry about. As far as preseason playing, if you're talking about fall exhibition, a redshirt can play since the games do not count. If a player plays during preseason non-conference matches, they lose their redshirt status. But exhibition matches, such as Hawaii v. Shanghai or BYU v. Red Deer College are allowed since they are not US college teams. So to answer your UCLA specific questions, Russell is still eligible to play for 4 whole years, assuming he doesnt play in any more games. Nihipali has 3 years left after this year, regardless of how many more games he plays this season.

but nihipali only played in the preseason. does that still count? (sorry, i had a hard day and don't understand)
what if the player plays 3 matches, gets hurt in the fourth, then plays the next two? can they still obtain a medical redshirt, or does the injury have to come in the last match they played?

If your talking preseason as in fall exhibition, no that does not count. He would still have 4 years after this year. If your talking preseason as in early in the spring against a non conference opponent, that does count. I dont know which match you are referring to, so I can't be of much help. As far as medical redshirt, I am not too sure of the details about it. Its usually something thats considered "season ending" for a player or something that will take them a while to recover from. But I dont know if that is some kind of rule or not.

I'm confused, sorry. I heard that if you play in the FALL matches, regardless of the opponent, it counts as a playing year because it was in a competitive match. Nihipali did play in the fall and so I've heard he is burning his first year, even though he isn't getting playing time for this Spring season. I've heard this from a couple of different credible sources. Perhaps Pat can come on and tell us his understanding of this since I've seen him post on here.
