CHICAGO (April 1, 2003) – The Loyola men’s volleyball team prevailed in a contest between the two teams with the highest hitting percentages in the nation Tuesday night at Alumni Gym. The thirteenth-ranked Ramblers (15-7, 12-3 MIVA) hit at a sizzling .496 clip to hand No. 5 Lewis (22-5, 13-1) its first MIVA loss of the season, 3-1 (30-27, 32-20, 21-30, 30-23).
Both teams started the match on fire, and Loyola had to in order to stay close to the Flyers who hit .460 for the match.
The Ramblers never trailed in the opening game but did not enjoy a lead larger than four points in the entire set, either. The Ramblers ripped 21 kills with two errors on 30 swings to post a .633 hitting percentage and were able to edge a Lewis squad that hit .640 in the opening stanza, 30-27.
Game two saw Loyola hit at an even higher percentage, but the Ramblers had to rally to win the set. Trailing 11-7 following a Fabiano Barreto service ace, Loyola quickly got back into the match and took the lead 15-14 into the technical timeout after a block assist from Dan Haas (Dubuque, Iowa/Wahlert) and Dan Kellum (Tipton, Mich./Columbia Central). Both teams continued to smoke the ball and trade points back and forth until Barreto knotted the match at 30-30 with a kill. A Lewis service error gave Loyola a 31-30 lead and a back row attack by Gustavo Meyer ended the second game, 32-30. Lewis connected for 19 kills on 30 attempts with two errors for a .567 hitting percentage while the Ramblers slammed 26 kills with three errors on 32 attacks for a .719 percentage.
Through the first two games, the Flyers hit .600 but because Loyola hit at a .677 clip, Lewis was in a two-game hole.
The Flyers wasted little time in controlling the third game and quickly showed why they entered Alumni Gym undefeated in MIVA play as they jumped out to a 12-8 advantage. The Ramblers attempted to make a comeback and cut the Lewis lead to 18-16, but the Flyers never flinched and moved their lead to five at 21-16 following Shawn SchroederÂ’s (St. Louis, Mo./Saint Louis University High) only attack error of the night. Lewis continued to build on its lead thanks to the .667 hitting percentage the Flyers racked up and the .276 clip Loyola hit for the set. James Elsea wrapped up LewisÂ’ lone win with a kill, 30-21.
Similar to how Lewis started quick in the third game, Loyola got out of the gates quick in the fourth game with hopes of defending its home court. Loyola built a 10-6 lead after a Haas kill and following a brief rally by the Flyers, the Ramblers soon rebuilt their lead to seven at 20-13 after Haas and Kellum teamed up to stuff a Barreto attack. Lewis cut the Loyola advantage to 23-19 following an Elsea attack but that would be the closest it would get the rest of the way. The Flyers entered the fourth game with just six hitting errors in the match but amassed 10 attack errors in the fourth game alone en route to a .135 hitting percentage. The match ended on a Lewis service error, 30-23.
Justin Schnor (Racine, Wis./Horlick) led all players with 20 kills and Schroeder recorded the second-best single-match hitting percentage in Loyola history when he ripped 17 kills on 18 swings with one error for a .889 hitting percentage. Shane Davis (Denver, Iowa/Denver) doled out a match-high 66 assists and the Ramblers got 14 kills from Haas and 13 kills from Mike Alesch (Elgin, Ill./Larkin) to wrap up the victory.
Barreto led Lewis with 19 kills and five errors on 32 attempts (.438) and had a match-best four service aces. Meyer chipped in with 17 kills and Elsea notched 11 kills on a .625 hitting percentage.
Loyola wraps up its regular-season home season with senior night Saturday night at 7:00 pm against Rutgers-Newark. The Ramblers will acknowledge the careers of five student-athletes: Tom Linstroth (Racine, Wis./Case), Kellum, Schnor, Davis and Haas.
