10-9 UH in G1.
TO SC.
Hawaii's LS attack is pathetic. It disgusts me when you consistently have just ONE blocker on you on almost every set, and you're STILL not be able to get a kill. I think besides passing, the Warriors are really lacking some proficient LS's. I'd actually like to see Kalima move back to LS because at least he was able to get kills- on one-on-ones nonetheless! Bleh Wilton; I still say Grgas needs to have a contributing role. Move Clar to the left(L1), along with Hakala(L2), and put Grgas at OPP.
Also, is there a reason why the men can't have it so that Schkud can play FR, and have Vanzant play BR for him like they do in the woments game??- Because I think they could use some of Vanzant's BR.
Anyway, USC will upset the Warriors tonight if they can't keep up with the scrappy Trojans. Killian and Figueroa haven't really upped the ante like i'm used seeing (yet).

Hawaii loses game 1 30-27, blowing a 6 point lead in the process, it's almost painful to watch this team. Beckwith looks frustrated, I'm sure this isn't the way he thought his senior season will be going.
The OH are weak, I remember Scott Robbs saying that they were supposed to get the foreign recruits this year, but since they were only evaluated on video tape when recruiting them, when they finally arrived they were not as good as they thought they would be. They are redshirting, and hopefully can contribute next season, anyway they are really paying the price for the recruiting mistake as the foreign recruits haven't panned out as expected.

Just got back from the match. Kind of an ugly spectacle from start to finish. USC showed some grit and Hawaii found another way to let a match-lead slip away to lose 15-13 (or 12?) in the 5th.
USC needs a libero.
Hawaii needs something... I can't put my finger on it, and its obvious neither can they.
USC's jumpin' bean, Juan Figuero ? is quite the fireball. Fun to watch.
Hawaii's middles are late, late, late closing most of the time, but they do put together some great blocking streaks.
I think the highlight of the night was the halftime dancing competition which was won by a couple celebrating their 49th anniversary from Maine.

I'm going to add one more thought I had during the game, this one is regarding the polls.
At what point does a voter have to stop voting on potential and start voting on results?
Clearly, the AVCA hasn't quite got there yet, or is eastern volleyball really in that bad of state? I find that very hard to believe. I'm not sure that either USC or Hawaii played like a top ranked team.
On the other hand, with only 22-teams to choose from... yeah, I suppose there could "only" be 8-or so teams that are worse.

I'll also add that Carney set exclusively in games 4 and 5. Beckwith was a good cheerleader.
To be honest, I kept repeating the Taco Bell commercial:
Lion 1: Car-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-n-ey, say it, sexy like Car-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-n-ey
Lion 2: Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarney
Lion 1: No, no, like Ricardo Monteban, Car-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-n-ey
Lion 2: Caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarney
When the match was said and done, I think it all came down the will and determination of probably the only guy who could roll his 'r's, Juan Figueroa, who ended up with the neighborhood of 35-kills.

Sigh, another loss for Hawaii. Hawaii is playing much better than they did a month ago. But the problem now is that they don't have a terminator. I said the same against UCSB. They had their chances to win, but they don't have a go to player who can get the point for them. The pieces are there, they just need someone to really step up and get the kill when it matters. Hopefully that will change when Hakala comes back. Clar is doing really well and he just needs more playing time before he can become the big banger Hawaii expects him to be.
Carney set for part of the fourth and all of the fifth set. He did really well. After Beckwith finishes his career in Hawaii, Carney will be a great replacement.
The middles did leave a lot of gaps in the block. But overall, it was decent blocking. They just don't have the personnel to stop a huge hitter like Figueroa. But in years past, they didn't have to have a huge blocker. The back row was good enough to pick up a lot of the balls. This year they are not as strong in the back row. But again, they are doing good enough to win, they just need that terminator.

Someone bestowed upon him that Carney Asada nickname last season.

But again, they are doing good enough to win, they just need that terminator. If Hakala's injury truly is an abdominal strain, it'll be really difficult for him to return this season at full strength. Its a shame because he's one of the players that really make me want to watch Warrior volleyball, real fiery, competitive, talented. I think the potential for a few Hawaii players to step up exists, but not sure if it'll happen real soon. I still think there is something fishy with chemistry, or something with Hawaii, though... again, can't put my finger on it.

UH was ranked #12 and USC #14 in the last poll. I would say that the coaches are voting on results.

This could end up being UH's worst-ever season since the program went varsity in the mid-80's.

I agree with you, Hakala won't return to full strength, and if he does, he'll be placed right at the position that caused such pain, and since he's not practicing right now, he still needs to figure out the approach for a OH. Hawaii needs a lot of work. I also got to thinking with Wallace leaving, is it possible Wilton won't be asked back once his contract is up?

I still think there is something fishy with chemistry, or something with Hawaii, though... again, can't put my finger on it. It's called lack of talent, skill, and experience. You can't field a strong team around 2 out of 6 players. And now one of them is hurt, so you got 1 out of 6. Some guys have talent but no experience. Some guys have athletic ability but no skill. Some guys I have no idea why they are even allowed on the court. Since UH isn't going to be recruting any more foreigners of the talent level of a Yuval Katz or Costas Theocharidis or Andre Bruer or Dejan Notgonnatrytospellhislastname after the whole incident with the 2002 title, they better get into the mix of recruting the best US talent. Tino Reyes is active in the USA pipeline doing summer coaching stints with the Boy's Youth National Team or HP or whatever it was I just got an email from USA Volleyball on. He better start doing the sales pitch and getting some of those kids to come to UH, otherwise UH will not only have a bad season this year, but for alot of years to come.

Is Grgas on Witon's craplist? Are they gonna redshirt him? Has he even sniffed the court since pre-season?
